Loosen axel bolt, turn adjusters equal amounts until you have 1/4-3/8 inch deflection at 10 pounds pressure on the bottom of the belt. There is a tool to measure 10 lbs pressure available from HD, part number HD-35381A. That tool did cost about $10.00 in 1994. Retorque the axle to 95-105 ft-lbs. Measure the deflection midway between idler pully and rear sprocket.

How to replace drive belt on a 1993 harley davidson heritage softail classic?

To remove a Softail drive belt FIRST remove the rear wheel then remove the primary chain, the clutch, the engine compensating sprocket, and the chain adjuster as an assembly, then remove the primary chaincase housing, place a support under the rear fork and engine, remove the pivot shaft and spacer, slip the drive belt off from the transmission sprocket.

To replace a Softail drive belt FIRST not that all belts, used or new, must never be formed into a loop smaller than 5.0 in. (130 mm), and must never be bent backwards because this can severely weaken the belt and cause premature failure if it, then install the belt over the transmission sprocket, install the pivot shaft and spacer, remove the support holding the engine and rear fork, install the primary chaincase housing, the primary chain, the clutch, the engine compensating sprocket, and the chain adjuster and the primary chaincase cover, fill primary the primary chaincase with oil, install the rear wheel, align the rear wheel and properly adjust the belt tension to the specified deflection.

Adjust belt drive rear wheel

If the question is how to adjust the drive belt, it's actually pretty easy. With the bike in the side stand you should have about 1/4-3-/8 deflection in the middle of the drive belt pushing with 10lbs of pressure. The best thing to do is purchase a drive belt deflection tool that you can set to 10lbs. If you need to adjust the belt, you loosen the axle nut on the right side and turn the axle from the left side to loosen or tighten the belt tension (Harley uses eccentric shaped washers on both sides of the axle to make this adjustment easy). Once you made the adjustment and tightened the axle nut, double check the deflection to make sure it didn't change while tightening the axle nut. Takes about 10 minutes to check and adjust.

Adjust drive belt

You didn't say what MODEL YEAR (yes, it makes a difference!), but here's a generic how-to.

Get rear wheel off ground.
Loosen jam nuts on axle adjusters (if they have one, varies by year).
Turn adjusters equal number of turns until belt tension is correct (belt deflexes 1" with 10 lbs pressure in center of top run).
Tighten jam nuts (if applicable).

Turn rear wheel in normal direction of rotation.
Check to ensure belt is running centered in rear pulley.
If not, tighten the axle adjuster on the side that the belt is pulling towards (if belt is to right side of pulley, tighten right adjuster to move right side of axle aft).

Adjust belt drive rear wheel

Raise the rear wheel safely (with a motorcycle stand of some type) Loosen the rear axel (27mm wrench works good) Adjust the tensioner bolts at the back of the swing arm(both sides) evenly until the belt is within specs. Turn the wheel forward and check to make sure the belt is spaced evenly between the sides of the rear pulley. Tighten the axel. Double check the belt tension with the wheel back on the ground.

Adjustment of drive belt on 1997 electraglide

Loosen the axle and the adjuster bolt lock nuts. Move the wheel to the rear by moving each adjuster on each side of the swingarm the same amount. when you get finished, the adjuster bolts should be the exact same lenght. You should adjust the belt with the rider on the bike. If that's you, see if you can get someone to sit on the bike while you adjust the belt. Adjust the belt so that you have about 1/2" up and down in the middle of the lower run with ten pounds of pressure pushing up on the belt. Torque the rear axle nut to 50-60 foot pounds.

Good luck
Steve

Don't know how adjust belt drive on vrscaw v rod can anyone help 2008 series

MOST HARLEYS IVE SEEN HAVE AN ECCENTRIC ON THE REAR DRIVE AXLE TO MAKE THIS ADJUSTMENT. IF SO, LOOSEN THE AXLE NUT AND ROTATE THE ECCENTRIC TO PROPER TENSION THEN TIGHTEN THE AXLE NUT. RECHECK TENSION AS IT MAY CHANGE DURING TIGHTENING.
