Question about 2004 Harley Davidson FLHTC - FLHTCI Electra Glide classic

2004 FLHTCI high fuel consuption, Fast idle, engine sputters

When started, the idel is real high, when running engine sputters and pops like it's bad gas, replaced gas, added fuel injector cleaner and gas treatment. When engine is idleing, I disconnect the throttle position sensor and it slows down to a normal idel, but when under load it resumes sputtering and popping. Diagnostics show no codes, replaced shredded breather tubes, new air filter. I suppose the next step would be to replace the throttle position sensor, but a lack of codes in the Diag mode is stopping me from doing so. Thanks in advance

Hi John, high idle on fuel injected models can be casued by a faulty IAC valve located on the top front of the induction module. It has either failed electronically and needs to be replaced or mechanically getting gummed by contaminated engine blow by. You can try cleaning the unit by removing the air cleaner and backing plate, unplug, unscrew and remove the IAC. Using carb cleaner and " LOW " volume compressed air to clean the metal pintle and shaft that is spring loaded and has an operating length of just under 1 inch. Aventurous souls who did not heed the low air warning have launched pintle and spring into parts unknown. There is no guarantee this will work but worth a try since a new one is $50.00 Good luck and have nice day.

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install new stock spark plugs. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. This process should get you back on the road.

well, if plugs are wet, try placing plugged in spark plug on the block, turn ingine, should spark blue. orange no good, none no. good lol.do both plugs and wires.if one works and the other one doesnt, you need a new plug.if both no good, having electronic ignition, most likely the coil is toast (make sure its plugged in good, cables and wires)

Most fuel injected motorcycles do start up in a "fast idle" mode. Although I don't know much about fuel injection on Harleys (H-D will not tell you much about it unles you are one of their technicians), I don't think the system is equipped with an engine temp sensor. Since the crank case sensor get it's pulses from pockets cut into the outer edge of the left side flywheel half, the sensor will have oil on it.

1. Throttle cables improperly adjusted, pinched or need lubrication.
2. Idle adjusting screw needs to be backed off.
4. Air fuel mixture adjusted too lean start with 2 full turns.
5. Intake system air leak.
6. Fast idle choke ramp is not releasing.
7. Broken throttle return spring.
8. Damaged diaphragm or slide.

1995 geo tracker sputters and stalls and wont idle


need more input. (8valve or 16valve engine , which option?)
black top engine , or silver 16)?
does it fail, cold or hot engine or both?
does it have full power from engine , at all speeds and loads (hills)?
and wide open throttle power.?
ever do the 60k tune up, not just a fuel filter?

how old is the fuel?
the pump/reg holds 34-43 psi.at all times...running.
sputter, from too low RPM ? below 800
or idle fast, but sputters at 800 and more?
if the latter, that is called misfire.
if the former that is lost of idle controls.
need to now which engine. because the are worlds apart.
EFI wise !

but here is a page on misfire. "sputter"

What is carburetor setting on a2.3 chainsaw


There is no fixed carburetor setting on these engines, just two screws to adjust low-end and high-end operation. Special tool may be required, there are about a half-dozen screw head standards. Check eBay for tool. Get the engine to run and idle fast (idle adjust) so it doesn't stall, adjust low-end screw so that engine doesn't hesitate or sputter when accelerated. Adjust high-end screw to run fast and smooth on full throtle. Readjust idle to normal.

Is the check engine light on ?
Have you checked the fuel pressure yet ?

Vanguard V Twin 18 hp. monted in Cushman Motor scooter, runs great at W.O.T and at on quarter throttle, misses at range inbetween


Sounds like your carb needs the fuel/air mix adjusted..uses all the gas at high speed but has excess at low speeds...find your adjusting screw and at med throttle slowly screw it clockwise until the engine starts to sputter then back it out until it starts to sputter again then continue to do this until you reach ideal mix where it runs the best it can..then go slowly through the throttle up and down..when set..unjust your idle speed screw to your ideal idle speed..if this dies not fix ..carb will bed cleaned or rebuilt. Good luck.. Note always push or pull your throttle handle slowly to position avoids gas load up causing sputter and backfire.

85 Yota pick-up, Ultra High and Low Idle, now no start


mcdevito75 here, Could be a dirty fuel fliter, remove fuel inlet toarb, crank engine but don"t start, container of 1 pint of gas should pump out from detached carb. fuel inlet, if not replace fuel pump. Very high idle and very low idle could also be a major vacumn leak, check all vacumn hoses, also check intake manifold, spray soapy water around intake manifold try to start, if you see water sucked in or engine now starts, there"s your problem, a vacumn leak.

1990 full size blazer starts fine idles then dies


sounds real easy either a bad idle air control solenoid or more likley a blown throttle body gasket. to test fro a blown gasket, with engine running and cool spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around base of tb were it bolts to intake. when it hits the bad area, should idle down and be normal for a second or 2. iac is possible,try this first since its so common and let me know
