Turn key to start - nothing happens

Generally the click is the starter solenoid engaging the fly wheel. The starter needs way more power than anything else in the car. It doesn't matter that the lights work. If the battery can't supply 10.5 volts under load, the starter won't turn. See if you can jump start the car and get to an auto parts store to have the battery checked.

you need the clutch in to start and there wia switch there that may need adjustment
same for the auto park /neutral switches

You may have a loose battery cable or a corroded one, clean as needed. Also listen if you hear a "click" noise from the starter, if so replace the starter the starter solenoid contacts are burnt. I have a 1996 C4 and have had this problem twice now in 80,000 miles, both times it was the starter solenoid (it is rebuild-able). You can buy a new on on eBay for cheap.

It could, in fact, be an intermittent open at the solenoid.
Make certain all the cables are connected properly and are appropriately tightened.

A few things I can think of are the starting circuit of the ignition switch, the neutral saftey switch, the starter solenoid, a fusible link, and a bad connection.

check alternator output at the alt and at battery also put a test light on the starter solenoid at the little wire on solenoid see if it lights up when turn key ? possible positive or negative cables have good ohm checks but not carrying enough current ?

The most common issue is a bad contact in the starter solenoid.
This solenoid is part of the starter assembly and makes the high amperage battery to starter connection
When you hear the click the solenoid is activating but not completing the battery to starter contact.
If this is an original starter or been on for a long time I would suggest changing the starter assembly.
Also in your under hood fuse/relay panel there is a smaller relay that activates the starter solenoid that should be checked before replacing the starter. Although less common for that to happen it does occasionally cause a problem. Easy to replace too.

Not all replacement parts are good. I would guess that the new ignition switch is bad. Its also possible that the wiring harness is loose where its connected to the ignition switch. You could try jiggling the wires.

It is not the solenoid. This issue is usually caused by a weak connection. Can you move the cable terminals on your battery by pulling on the cables? That should not happen. Tighten the terminals.
