My 1985 toyota tercell 2wd wagon engages in reverse but wont engage when i put it in drive? any suggestions?

Hi do check gear linkages or cable adjustments.otherwise possible gearbox malfunction.

Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

Carb may need rebuilt.

have you checked the fluid gear oil itself 1st hmmm would you elaborate on this for me is the linkage connected and have you done any work to the said vehicle prior or just one day woke up and this is the issue

Try putting it in to 4 wheel drive then put it in reverse then put it back in drive.

Not sure if this works with your car or not but it's worth a try.

Place in park
start motor
put foot on the brake
place car in neutral
If your car has a button marked 2wd push it. This should return you to 2wd mode
return car to park
turn off motor and remove foot from the brake.
BUT the best thing you can do is read your owners manual if you do not have one call your nearest Toyota dealer and ask for the service department and ask them how to put it back into 2wd

THERE IS A SWITCH ASSEMBLE ON THE FIREWALL WITH VACUUM HOSES GOING TO IT. MAKE SURE THE VACUUM HOSES TO IT ARE GOOD..NOT LEAKING. ALSO, WHEN WAS THE TRANS FLUID / DIFF FLUID LAST CHANGED? ALSO TRY DRIVING IN REVERSE AFTER PUTTING CAR IN NEUTRAL WITH CAR RUNNING AND SWITCHING TO 2WD. SEE IF THIS WORKS.
