My lawn mower started smoking-whitish, looked like it came from the carb. It also made some shaky noises like something was loose. Then it quit running. A while later I started it again-it started fine, but I only got 1 row done before it started smoking again, making that noise and then quit again. My son had put it up the last time and all the oil drained out so I put new oil in. There was a lot of grass packed underneath also, but I try to knock that off. I'm afraid to pick it up and look for fear the oil or gas will run out again. Can I fix this myself or should I just take it in?

Recheck your oil level. The smoking routine you mentioned sounds like the crank case is being over-pressurized from too much oil. That results in the crank case breather dumping oil into the intake of the carb. Then you see all the white smoke and hear the engine making odd sounds because of the excess crank case presure. Just re-check the oil level. There are 2 lines on the dip stick. The oil level should NOT be above the upper line with the dip stick fitted in the run position.

If you still have the problem please respond with an engine model number. If it is a Briggs and Stratton engine the number will be on the air shroud near the spark plug wire. Honda and tecumseh the number will be not far from the lower end of oil tube or next to the dip stick on engines without an extended tube stamped on side of the engine base.

Let me know if you still need help after correcting the oil serviciing level. There is more that can be checked..... just need that engine number.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

What makes a loud clicking noise from a mower

The clicking noise could be many things. You could be about to throw a rod, your blade may have come loose, really hard to tell. Does the mower run fine otherwise? Maybe something has come loose and is catching on the flywheel. Does the engine smoke?

My mtd yard machine (leaf blower) started billowing white smoke. I shut it off and now it won't start again.

First check the oil level. If its overfilled correct it. Then remove the spark plug and turn the engine over. Replace the spark plug.
Start the engine. Use a prime ( squirt carb cleaner into carb) if you need to. It may start smoking again. Thats OK as long as you know there is oil in it and you dont hear any strange noises. Let the unit run for about 5-10 minutes and see if the smoke clears up. Once it quits smoking stop it and check the oil.

Lawn Boy pushmower blew out lot of whitish-blue smoke after starting (has not run in 110 days). Checked oil level, was to high, so removed some oil, after thar ran fine but after 10 minutes, same...

Hi, change the oil and your problem will be solved. Basically it was over full because fuel has by-passed the carby needle and leaked into the sump while its been sitting idle. Regards Phil.

I left my lawnmower under a tree during a rain storm...now it doesn't start. help me.

first try letting the lawn mower dry out thouroughly in the sun, take off the air filter and dry and clean thoroughly try spraying some ether into the carb while the filter is off and pull start , also try taking out the spark plug and cleaning, also check the oil to make sure it is a nice clear color or the color it was when oput in and not a whitish brown, which would mean you got water in your engine if it is whitish brown have it serviced

My toro mower will start, but will shut off about 30 seconds later. it almost sounds like it is stuttering after i start it. after it is done sputtering, it shuts off

Sounds like a Carburetor problem. The float may be sticking, or even bad gas or water in the fuel. Try some Starting fluid to see if it keeps running while spraying in the intake. Look at the smoke from the exhaust, if it is a dark color, then too much fuel and choking out, if it is a whitish smoke then it is starving for fuel.

I have a Centura 3.5 Tecumseh lawn mower. It sat

If the oil level is too high smell the oil to see if it has gas in it. If it does the carb needs to be cleaned and the oil changed.
