2003 Explorer AWD front differential goes out

The front differential keeps burning up after driving on highway for 100+ miles. I tdoes fine at low speeds in town but it has burt up 3 differential in 6 months all on thehighway. Local Ford techs are lost. Sounds like sensors or something not kicking out the AWD but nobody knows locally. Any help would be appriciated. I'm into it for $5k so far.

Hi.! I bought a Honda cr-v model 2003 and did not have manual book, how cal i tell if its two wheel drive or front wheel drive.is there an indication where can i look? Thanks..

Depends on the model, if it is all wheel drive it should have AWD on the back window.
The Honda CRV uses very smart technology to have AWD. Let me explain it simply. The CRV is essentially a front wheel drive car, but there are sensors mounted on all the tires that sense slipping. If the computer determines the wheel is spinning faster than the other ones, it uses hydraulics to engage the rear end differential and presto..All Wheel Drive. You do nothing, no switches, no levers, the computer does it all for you. If it is indeed AWD, you can look under the car to see if you have a driveshaft going into the rear differential (axle)

Please vote if this helped! Thanks, Mike

Does my 2003 ford explorer sport have front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. my email is [email protected]

it is most likely an automatic awd, 4 hi is full time 4 wheel drive, 4 lo is full time 4 wheel drive but at a very low gear ratio and should not exceed 25 mph or could cause damage. and DO NOT shift into 4 lo while vehicle is in motion. Auto is a 2 wheel drive but automatically engages into 4 wheel drive under heavy acceleration.

05 Jeep GC 5.7 Hemi AWD- low grade groaning road noise

Pulsating in the brake pedal is normally an indication of ABS problems or master cylinder problems. A quick check after a short trip may isolate this further. drive the vehicle about 1 or 2 miles, preferably on a highway, then get out and feel for heat from the tires one at a time. Be careful not to touch the hot areas of the wheels. If you feel more heat coming from one tire than the others then the Caliper may be sticking causing the problem. You also need to check your read brakes this way as well as they could also cause this problem if they are sticking.

2003 SL Nissan Murano 150,000 miles. After driving

most likely it is the transfer case leaking. known problem on the AWD models. they leak right down on the exhaust and causes the burning smell. have it checked out again.

Rear differential / axle noise and vibration.

At this point, I would take the cover off of the differential and look inside. You may be able to do it yourself or have someone else look at it. If there is a problem, you should be able to see it. Look for metal shavings and burned parts.

Do not wait, as this problem can go from a small problem to a big one fairly quickly if it isn't already too late.

Differentials don't last long without lubrication.

If you need more help, post a comment and I will get back to you.

Thanks,

Tim
