Tip & How-To about Motorcycles

Fast relief for fouled spark plugs

I have found that by pulling the spark plug cap part way off of a fouled spark plug, so that the spark has to jump about 1/4" from the electrical contact inside the plug cap, to the end of the spark plug has the effect of raising the voltage to the spark plug considerably. Usually it's enough to cause a fouled spark plug to begin functioning normally again. It doesn't work in every instance - but you've got nothing to lose by trying it.

will not start

Can't do much till you know if it's fuel or spark delivery. If stored a long time change everything. Remove plug and insert into wire cap. Lay threads on engine block in a dark area, and pull starter cord. Don't hold plug w/ your hand! Spark should be obvious jumping electrode. No spark means at least an electrical problem, but usually spark is there and prob. Is w/ fueling. Look/listen/smell for fuel delivery while turning over w/ plug removed. Very common cause is fouled/old plug, or bad gas due to long storage w/out fuel stabilizer.

feels like its stuttering when i drive it (feels like it is gonna cut off)

Possible causes for your problem are:
  1. Cracked distributor cap
  2. Bad spark plug wires
  3. Fouled spark plugs
  4. Bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor
  5. Bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor
A visual inspection of the top 3 should take the least amount of time. Look for cracks in the distributor cap, burned spots inside the cap, bare spots on the spark plug wires. Pulling a spark plug and looking for evidence of oil to determine if it's been fouled.

93 jeep cherokee , iv got spark at the coil but not at the plug just replced cap, roter, wires, but still notheing got any ides ?

Coil may be producing low voltage (KVs) to where it makes enough energy to snap out of the coil tower but then supressed as it travels down the high tension leads finally to the plug. Incidentally spark plug leads should have about 10k ohms of resistance per foot.I good coil will jump spark at least a half inch if you pull the wire off the cap and produce this much air gap

99 5.2 durango :pulled codes for multipe missfire cylinder #5-7

Aloha We have just replaced all of what you have replaced, plus water pump, fuel pump, pcv valve and 02 sensor. Took it to mechanic today we had misfire on 1,2,6,7. Mechanic said that the 99 dodge is known for bad computers, he checked ours and works great turns out that it was the coil. Ours was jumping 1/4 inch and had a orange/yellow spark. it is supposed to have a 1 inch spark and be blue. This has solved our problems after 527 dollars later.
Check the coil!
