Freeing a siezed bolt

1.File a flat on each side and grip the bolt with a pair of mole grips 2 Give the bolt a sharp tap with a hammer or punch set the punch at 45 degrees pointing outwards and give it a few taps.
3. try soaking the bolt with penatraing fluid see my comments below.

A Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts.
Significant results! They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist,
They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 .................. 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds
The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.
Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local
machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that
"Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

how to remove stripped bolt


Hi Anonymous, it all depends on the size and location. That being said I would take your bike to your local dealer or reputable shop and they will be happy to remove it for a small fee. Good luck

Cannot remove the filter at the bottom of machine


Classic problem. These little devils are often incredibly stiff for the first quarter turn. Crude but effective, my trick has always been to take a couple of pairs of mole grips, clip on to each side of the lugs taht you are supposed to twist and turn with your hand and then slide a long screwdriver between the 2 clamped on mole grips and use it as a lever.

i cannot remove the front filter screwcap on my hoover ultima wt741 washing machine any tips please?


This is a common problem, my fix is 2 pairs of mole grips and a long screwdriver. Clip a grip nice and tight on the furthest sides of the grip/handle that you use to unscrew the cap. trap the screwdriver between the 2 grips and use it as a lever to unscrew the cap.

I have 2 stripped heat sink screws I need to remove any suggestions?


Hi, what do you mean by 2 stripped screws do you mean the pins the x clamps fit onto or have you removed the xclamps and used normal m5 machine screws,
if its the xclamp pins then use pliers or mole grips
if its the m5 machine screws then you have 2 options either get a decent set of mole grips and lock these onto the head of the screw and these should then get it undone or you will have to drill them out using a tap and die set.

let me know what screws are threaded, mole grips should do it as these clamp on

how to remove from the steering column the ignition braket of a 94 ford festiva


I just did this same job last week. There are two security screws on the top of the steering column that you need to remove. They are security screws, so they are designed to be difficult to remove to prevent theft of your car. There are two ways to remove the special rounded head screws. Naturally, there is no head on the top that you can just get a socket on, so you have to get they turned counter-clockwise by other means. If you have a sharp pin-***** style punch and a hammer, you can make a small dent in the rounded head with the punch and hammer that will allow you to get a grip on the bolt with when trying to turn it by hitting it with the punch and hammer. So first hit it hard at a 90 degree angle to make a nice deep dent or divet hole in the bolt head. Then use that hole to start trying to turn it by changing the angle of the punch pointing in the direction you want the bolt to turn. You'll be surprised, but the bolt will actually turn quite easily if you are very careful and are handy with the tools. If this doesn't work for you, the second method is to get a Dremel tool (with a mounted cut-off disk) and use that to grind a screwdriver groove in the top of the screw head so that you can simply unscrew it with a screwdriver. You could also grind flat spots on each side of the bolt so that you can grab it with a wrench or needle nose pliers.
The manual says to try using a pair of needle nose pliers first, because you just might be able to get the bolt to turn simply by grabbing it with the pliers if you are lucky enough to have the right pair in your tool box with a pointed enough tip (and good grip) that will allow good enough access. Usually the bolts are not that tight because they can loosen a bit after 20 + years.
