Hi, Tom you need to make sure you have no intake leaks by spraying some Brake Kleen, Contact Cleaner, Starting Fluid etc. around the intake manifold and seals, if the RPM's go up or down significantly then you have a leak that needs to be fixed before you can continue with the carburetor adjustment.
The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle skrew clockwise to increase the idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture skrew you may turn it as well, if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture skrew clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back the skrew out 1-1/2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and turn the idle skrew accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, turn the air fuel mixture skrew 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, turn the skrew clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture, you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture skrew can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then resetting the idle skrew back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture skrew all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big and needs to be replaced with the next size smaller. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor.

wheel bearings or swing arm bearings sounds like, i presume the back break works as normal, if its more of a rattle that a knocking could be brake pad spring missing.

changing the thermostat and flushing out the rad would be the first things to try after this its the tem censer

You pretty well identified the problem. Sounds like a bad bearing but also check the speedometer drive.

Replacing or checking the timing chain will require "opening" the engine, but only the valve cover should need to come off.

Tread pattern can affect road noise considerably. Did you select a type designed for dirt? It would be a sort of rough buzz. Check for correct air pressure. An incorrect tire mounting usually causes a 'lumpy' ride and could be very dangerous at speed. Raise the front end till the wheel is clear and spin the tire. An improper mounting will show as an uneven tire pattern as the wheel turns.

hi mate this is either a unbalanced wheel/tyre or the bearings rough lift front end up and spin wheel if you hear a horrible wooshing or crunching noise its bearing problems also if there is movement

yep, a lot more, if oil has been changed when it should. usual soution to this, unless it really is rattling badly, is to go out and give the bike a real good thrashing. that will stretch the chain a tiny bit and allow the cam chain tensioner to move on to it's next click in the ratchet. in other words, unless it sounds like a bag of nails, leavi it alone but keep an ear out for it getting worse, these engines are one of the best about, not like the Honda who haven't yet found out how to make a cam chain tensioner.

I have had the same problem. It is not the spark plugs - although it is always a ggod idea to change them to eliminater them as a potential issue.
The Spark plug holder can be a problem - in my case the wires leading from the ignition lead into the holder - had started to work loose- a common problem apparently. Solved by changing the holders.

the tensioner is definitely a problem on these bikes

2003 Yamaha FZS... | Answered on Apr 12, 2009

Hi, I would start by checking to be sure the battery has a good enough charge, if not then locate the starter relay and try jumping the two terminals on it and seeing if the bike will start that way if so then you will need to replace the starter relay. good luck
