How do you check the timing and adjust the carb.

Hi, is this still on points ignition? The spark should occure between .5 and 1 mm before top dead centre, on some of the older machines the ignition timeing is not addjustable as the backing plate is fixed, however the ignition timeing can be determined by the correct points gap, the points should open at the correct time as the piston reaches the top of the stroke, if you dont have a top dead centre gauge, you could improvise by making some markings on a thin rod which you will insert into the spark plug hole, rotate the engine in the correct direction by hand until the piston is at top dead centre, that is the piston has reached its upermost stroke before it starts to decend, at tdc turn the engine back the required amount untill your markings point out the required amount, it is at this point the points should just sepparate creating a spark, a test light with a small 9volt battery in line will indicate the separation of the points, i would however like to stress the third most important item to make a two stroke run is compression, spark and fuel alone is insufficiant without it, on machines that have been standing for long periods of time the piston rings can become stuck in the piston, not allowing the rings to seal the bore, remove the exhaust and look up the Port the piston should look as new with no scoring to it, any damage will prevent the engine from running, as will worn crankshaft oil seals which can become soft from old fuel contamination

Yamaha SR 400 timing chain

Hi There honzakot
Yup, SR400 and 500 are the same engine in this respect. Seems most top end parts for the 500 fit the 400. . Check this link (yoshimura) for some supporting evidence. sr400 jumps straight to the SR500 at Bike Bandit also.

Where does the hose go thats on the top and back

HELLO; Thats one of the vent tubes, and yes it needs a hose, then run it up to the rubber flap around the air filter intake. There should be a hole to run it through so it can vent. GOOD LUCK.

We have a 1980 Yamaha

Hi,

Sometimes the flywheel key can shear
putting the ignition timing off.
The inside of the flywheel can
rust causing problems.

a compression check will tell
you if the valves and engine
are okay. This is always the first
thing to check.

Is the fuel running through
the carb okay if you open the carb
drain screw?

Sometimes the fuel can have water
in it and needs to be drained
and new fuel added.

Check the spark plug cap as these
are known to have problems.

Carbs have to cleaned very thoroughly
to get all the passageways clean.

Is there a good flow of fuel to the carb?

Will it start on a spray of starting fluid?
Is the air filter and air box clean?

Sand any rust off the flywheel magnet surface
and check that the coils are
not rusted either.
You will need a puller to remove the flywheel.

Clean any ignition connector plugs you
can find with electronic spray.

Let me know,once done.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Engine oil draining

Hello, you will find that the seal between the gearbox and motor is leaking, check your gearbox oil, it should be getting close to coming out of the gearbox breather (over full), do not ride, you will damage and burnout your gearbox.

I have a 1986 yamaha

You should purchase a gasket and seal set, pull your motor out of the sled, disassemble the motor, and replace all the gaskets and seals. You can purchase a piston kit on line that should come with pistons , rings , gaskets , and seals. The main problem you are having is an air leak on one or both of the crank end seals. Usually the clutch side seal leaks first. If you continue to drive you will probably score one or both of the cylinders. When you have the motor apart clean your carburetors and replace your spark plug caps. NGK has new plug caps for about $5 each. If your cylinders look good i would consider doing a light hone job and ring replacement. Again if you just buy new aftermarket seals pistons and gaskets you should be able to do a complete rebuild for about $150. Then your engine will be good for another 25 years. If you are limited on funds Just replace the crank seals , clean the carburetors, and put on new NGK plug caps (about $30).
