Why doesn't it idle unless choke is on?
Maybe you are running too lean. When the choke is on it reduces (chokes) the air being drawn in meaning higher fuel to air mixture (richer because of more fuel and less air). Turn the choke off and more air is drawn in and the fuel to air mixture is reduced. There should be a mixture screw where you can alter the mixture to the required setting for normal running.
Bike starts fine but after it warms up it has to
If you are saying the bike will start fine when cold, but after it is warm it will not start then I would recommend inspecting and or replacing the intake gasket / material. What may be happening is after the bike gets hot the 'seal' is lost and that makes for a lean condition, hence not starting. you may have other issues, however this is a cheap potential solution. Hope this helps,
JP
Valves
i wouldnt recommend using 03 valves though thay may work ok initially. each year there are slight changes made to the valve sistems on the ktms this is especially true. if you do use them initially it may be ok but could lead to huge damage to the case
Noise
but when i tried to kick start the bike it had full compresion or near enough but makes a nocking noise at aboute half way down on the kick start. there for i striped the bike and checked piston rings valves , the lot rearly and it seem's as if the noise is from the gearbox if you lads could help would be great thanks,Could be a number of things. First, pull off the left side cover. You'll see the magneto and all that good stuff. Try and see if you can move it up and down at all. If you can, you'll need some crank bearings. If it's fine, check the condition of the clutch. That's all I can really think of if your top end's fine.,,,
Ktm problems
Guess I don't have to tell you water got in somewhere. Being a total loss, start big, like your ignition key. Get a can of WD40, and perhaps a can of electric contact cleaner, first squirt cleaner in, then follow up with WD40, work you way through your switches (good thing to do regularly as routine maintenance)
Of course check you fuses, however if one is blown, check things over before replacing it or it may blow out again and/or cause other problems. Spray all your connections and plugs, a good idea anytime. They take a lot of abuse and are exposed to the elements.
Did you pressure spray? If so you may have knocked some wires loose so look close.
Be sure your battery is charged, sometimes water can create a path and drain your battery.
Start here and report back if no luck.
Some rare instances, pressure spraying a hot motor, hot components can short them out.
I have a 2011 ktm 450 sx and it wont shift into 5 gear
A number of solutions possible here. 1. Check the oil level. If low, fill up.2. You can adjust the gear change lever which will give an extra movement. If this solves the problem then your gearing is wearing out.3. It is possible the 5th gear has dismounted from its shaft or is damaged. This is dependent on what happened in the first place when you lost the gear. Was there a loud banging noise? Was there a grinding noise? etc. If this is the case then you've got repair issues. Good Luck. George
Fully rebiult engine has good
assuming this is an electric start 4 stroke, is it winding over fast enough? Try put a set of jumper leads on it to make it wind over faster. I'm in New Zealand and the fuel here is ****. If my bike sits for more than a few days I drain the carb before trying to start it. Then I give one or two twists on the thottle and with one hand on the choke I push the start button without touching the thottle and as soon as it fires pull the choke out. After about 10 to 20 seconds push the choke back in and should be running fine. This seems to be the best way to start my bike.
