2002 KTM EXC 380 Questions & Answers
RATTERLY SOUND FROM POWER VALVES OR EXHAUST CONTROL VALVE.
Gooped up power valve should not produce noise. One would think it the valve was that loose, or the spring were gone it would develope a lower, strange curved, punchy power band, but not make noise. Still, it wouldn't hurt to see which spring (or lack thereof) is in the valve.
The run-on, rough high RPM and noise would tend to make me think of a lean condition. How's the plug looking?
Does anyone have experience with KTM 380 exc power
Sorry you may need to repost this question, perhaps you mean chain?
A power band is an area on a graph of power v rpm where the engine produces its best power for the engine speed. it is not a physical object.
No power band
Are you sure you havent just kinked a hose somwhere. Maybe the crankcase breather pipe or even the fuel tank breather pipe.
If the timing was okay before you stripped it I really would double check all the pipes.
Also if you had the engine upside down when you were working on it perhaps some oils got on the plug so preventing you getting a decent spark
Mud stain
depends on what material is stained..
Aluminium stains can be very tricky to get clean if not impossible...some cleaners will also cause a orange/reddish stain wich will not come out unless you use some harsh chemicals to get them out. problem is it's hard to get to those chemicals.
IF you happen to have a truck wash nearby where they wash the big trucks (18 wheelers)take your parts there and tell them to use some brightener on it it's a chemical that really cleans aluminium.it may cost you a little bit of money but that stuff really works and i haven't been able to find that stuff for private sale anywhere.
the number 2 reasons for stains on the bike are :
1) waiting to long to wash the bike some types of sand/mud especially the red dirt we have down south here will stain a bike if you leave it on the bike not only that it dries as hard as concrete and is very difficult to remove , so was your bike ASAP.
2) washing chemicals. Some chemicals / soaps when they are left too long on aluminium will leave stains as it reacts with the aluminium , these stains are almost impossible to get out. ,,,
Grips
u can take the current ones off by simply heating them to warm the cement then pull...if that doesnt work u could use a razor blade but bake sure that u dont cut anything.
you could put the wire around the grip if u want its all up to u.
Start \ timing
how do i check the timing. If it used to start...then very unlikely that timing slipped. Take it you have a good spark! to electrically/dynamically check timing you can use a strobe gun. Or take off flywheel and check position of the stator plate.,
"kick starter will not turn
this is due to the mechanism inside the gearbox, try draining the gearbox oil and takeing the side case off and putting the mechanism back in the correct place but be very careful of the kick start spring that it doesnt hit you wen it comes off, the spring will need to be twisted round twice then hooked back on the locator when putting back together
LC4 640 SMC. Why no spark?
Have you checked battery connections. Run switch in the correct position? Checked spark plug for debris? Just thinking out loud..

I HAVE A KTM 450 EXE 2004 MODEL AND I HAD TO REPLACE MY HEAD GASKET ANWATER PUMP SEALS AND NOW IVE GOT THE TINYEST DRIP OF COOLANT DRIPPING DOWN BEHIND THE FLY WHEEL WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS ?
It's a bad seal of the head gasket. You need a new head gasket and to scrape every particle of debris from the cylinder head and cylinder surfaces that mate with the head gasket. Use the factory specified gasket sealing compound and do a clean job - no blobs or pools of the stuff. The head gasket should lay flat on the surface of the top of the cylinder, and you have to make this surface free of grit, leftover sealant and any other foreign matter before you put the head in place and torque it down. Start with the head bolts just finger tight and then go by the manufacturer's specs for the pattern and amount of torque to be applied. Usually it is recommended that you get to the specified torque amount in stages, going around several times and repeating the torque pattern until you get that maximum rated amount. This will prevent the seal from shifting or warping and should make the gasket seal perfectly. This is the old school method of doing this job. and I have never seen this fail to produce good results. Take your time, be clean, and you will have the results you want.
