How to convert printed text to a text file with OCR.
Steps:
1. OCR - Optical Character Recognition - is a computer program that works with a scanner. It converts the scanned page to a text file. The text must be typeset (books, magazines, newspapers), manually typed (a machine we used to use before PC?s and laser printers) or computer printed. OCR doesn?t work with hand-written pages.
2. Copy the text file into Word, proofread it, change the format, load it to a web site ? do anything you would if you had typed it into the computer yourself. Some OCR loads directly to Word.
3. Many scanners come with OCR software. You can also buy an OCR package for your scanner. The packages are expensive, however. Search on Google for brands and prices.
4. Kinko's will rent you time on a machine with OCR. If you have just a few pages, this might be cheaper than buying a program yourself. Other "Document Center" stores rent time too.
5. Once you have a computer with OCR and a scanner in front of you, at home, office or document store, scan the document. It may then ask you to correct characters it doesn?t recognize. If the type was fuzzy, ?ri??? may come out ?n??? or vice versa. It may not. Mine gives me the option to click on File -> Import text into Word, and I have to use Word to change ?wnte??? to ?write???.
6. They all work a little differently. Click on Help and hunt around for text, save text, format.
