I have a 1998 Monte Carlo-- same problem-- no brake lights other than the center one in rear windshield. I took it to 2 mechanics, same diagnosis-- $550- $600. They have to remove steering wheel, airbag, etc., etc. email me and I can tell you how I fixed the problem with $17.00 for parts and about 1-1/2 hrs of my time. It was an easy fix. Now that I know this works, I just thought I would answer this in fixya, because this is where I started to try to find a solution to this problem.

Where to find the wire going to the trailer towing plug for the braking.

As far as I know, your trailer towing package does not include a circuit for trailer braking. These packages normally only supply taillights, brake-lights, and turn signals.
RV sales and service dealerships should be able to help you.
God bless your efforts.

How do you find out if you have the wires for a tow package? Trying to hook up a trailer with electrical brakes.

The wires would be secured under the rear of the truck. However trailer wiring is only for trailer lighting. Electric trailer brakes require a trailer brake controller.

It sounds like you lost a ground.
check traier hookup first.
Probably not the controller.

Trailer brake controller problem

I found the problem. Talking with a technician from the controller company, we determined that it was a fuse problem. I found that the fuse to the CHMSL was blown.

If you have amber signal lights & red brake lights, it's 2 separate circuits. You'll need to buy a small converter that you wire into harness to correct that. Not expensive, try autoparts store or RV/trailer sales, should have them.

Is this a 4 way or 6 way connection system? If your truck is wrong, then all factory equipped trailer package harnesses would be wrong, tell your trailer guy...I don't think so.
Is this the first trailer you have hauled?
Let me know, and we will go from there.
