Snapped wheel bolt how do i remove the snapped piece? what kind of drill would it take to drill it out?

Trying to replace old ignition cylinder with a new one but the old one doesnt have a key


The casing for the lock cylinder is not solid and it has to be 2 pieces in order to fit around the steering column. But the reason you can't see that it has two pieces is because they are held together by bolts that are designed to have their heads shear off after they are tight. You have to drill out the shear bolts or back them out with a hammer and chisel to turn them CCW.

How to remove a broken bolt the easy way...


Say you have snapped the head off a rusty bolt on the car, its infuriating!

But, there is a fantastic tip from a mechanical engineer that works every time, and is easy to do!

Lets assume the bolt is a 10mm exhaust stud or similar, take a 4mm drill bit (sharp one) and a 4mm hex (allen) key, (especially a t-bar type or socket mounted one) - drill a pilot hole right down into the bolt with the 4mm drill, as far as you can without snapping the drill bit in the bolt!!! Use light pressure, a sharp drill bit and let the drill do the work, and keep it straight....then when you pull the drill out, tap the hex key into the hole you made with a hammer, get it in as far as you can, it will be a tight fit as the 4mm hex key measures 4mm from flat to flat across it, and the corners of each flat are slightly more than that so it bites very well into the bolt, spray plenty of release fluid or wd40 around the exposed bolt thread to help loosen it, leave for 10 minutes if rusty, then turn the hex key with either a socket and wrench or the t-handle on it, and it will turn the bolt without slipping!

And hex keys are VERY VERY strong, much stronger than a bolt as they are tempered high tensile steel - the bolt will unscrew with ease! Forget useless screw and bolt extractors! And simply pick a drill size that gives a decent hole leaving some metal at the sides of the bolt but not too small a size, and keep the hex key to the same size in mm as the drill you use, if you made a mistake just go up a size or 2 on both drill bit and hex key and you get another try, but should not need it!

Chilton online manuals has decent (at best) step-by-step instructions. It lacks detail, but if you have some auto knowledge, it's not too bad. When I removed my head bolts, out of 14, 4 did NOT snap! Yes, that's right, 10 of them snapped! Rather than spending $300 on an extraction kit I found a metric bolt that fit into the bolt hole - not threaded, just in the top part where there are no threads. You need a guide to drill into the snapped bolt piece. After finding the right sized bolt, I cut it to about 3/4". Then I used a nut to tighten it, centered on my drill press. I used a good bit (with plenty of oil) to drill a hole right through the top, centered. This worked as my guide, and ALL 10 snapped pieces came out VERY easily. DON'T SPEND $300 ON AN EXTRACTION KIT!!

Drill the bolt out with the appoint size bit and use an ease out to extract it. Is the bolt broken flush with the outside of the engine or is it recessed??

I have a jeep liberty05 and my oil pan drain plug was put in by last owner so tightly i had to use an irwin east out in doin so with my impact the inside threade piece that the plug screws into broke off...

We are trying to get the ignition barrel out of a Ford Escort. 1996 model (R Registration). We has a small piece of wood stuck in the ignition and can not get it out. Please could you help?


you need to remove the cowl under the wheel,and drill the bolts out with a thin bit,then use an easyout to remove the 2 bolts.the barrel will then fall out.....how on earth did you get a bit of wood into the barrel?????

How to get the blinker switch assembly out of a 1966 oldsmobile 98?


1966 Olds 98?
It's been a while, so bear with me. The main objective is to remove the steering wheel, to have access to the turn signal switch.

1.Negative battery cable disconnected

2.I believe you twist the horn button in the middle of the steering wheel, and pull up, to remove. The horn button should have a ring of thick rubber on the bottom, which keeps it in the steering wheel. The chrome piece under the horn button may come off with it, or it stays on the steering wheel. This is the part that is fuzzy to remember.

3.Remove the steering wheel nut, and lock washer.

4.If you do not have a steering wheel puller, go to your nearest auto parts store, and see if one is available to rent. The cost of this puller is relatively low, so you may just want to go ahead, and purchase one. While you're there you need to obtain another tool also. Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool.

5.After the horn button is removed, and the steering wheel nut, you will see a flat metal area of the steering wheel. On each side of the threaded part of the steering column shaft, there are two small threaded holes, in this flat metal area.

The steering wheel puller, is a bar shaped piece of metal, that has a threaded hole in the middle. There is a threaded shaft that goes into this hole. On each end of the metal bar are slots. Threaded bolts go through these slots, and line up with the two threaded holes in the steering wheel. There is a pointed tip, that rotates on the threaded shaft, of the steering wheel puller. This pointed tip goes in the middle of the steering wheel shaft. (The shaft that you removed the nut from)

Find the two correct threaded bolts in the steering wheel puller kit, that matches the threads in the steering wheel holes. They HAVE to be the correct size, AND the correct thread. (Fine thread, or Coarse thread. They will be SAE thread, and not Metric) If the puller does not come with bolts, or the correct bolts, you'll have to purchase them separately.

Place the puller on top of the steering wheel shaft. Run the threaded shaft of the puller down, until at least 3 to 4 threads of the shaft, are showing on the steering wheel side. Now place a threaded bolt in the slot on the outside part of the bar.

Run the bolt down into the steering wheel threaded hole on one side. Make sure it goes in at least 1/2 inch. Do the same with the threaded bolt for the other side.
Adjust the length of the threaded shaft of the puller, so that the two outside bolts will go in as advised. Adjust the threaded shaft out, or in. Be SURE the two threaded bolts, are threaded down into the steering wheel the same depth, and the bolts are the same length!

Now turn the threaded shaft of the steering wheel puller in, with a ratchet and socket, to remove the steering wheel. (Turn the shaft to the Right)

6.Now remove the steering wheel lock ring. The steering wheel lock ring tool is now used.
There is a cylindrical shaped piece that has threads on the inside of it, and has a hole at the top, that a lock pin slides through, for the above tool. This cylindrical shaped piece is threaded down onto the steering wheel shaft.

The tool has a handle shaped like a screwdriver handle, and a shaft attached to the handle. The shaft goes down into the cylindrical shaped piece. Then the lock pin goes through the cylindrical shaped piece, and also a hole in the shaft of the tool. This lock pin locks the cylindrical shaped piece to the shaft of the tool.

BEFORE the cylindrical shaped piece is pinned to the shaft, you slide a U shaped piece up on the shaft. (Thought it would be better to explain it this way)
The opening of the U, goes down towards the steering wheel. It's U shaped to clear the steering wheel shaft.

As you turn the handle of the tool to the right, it pushes the U shaped piece down. The U shaped piece then depresses the steering wheel lock ring down.
(There is a Thick metal spring under the steering wheel lock ring)

You have to take a metal pick, and a small flat tip screwdriver, and remove the round snap ring. May take a little finesse, and a few tries. Use patience. Now back the steering wheel lock ring tool off. (Turn to the Left) The steering wheel lock ring will come up, so that you can take it off. Remove the spring. Remove the plastic horn contact assembly. Now you can see the screws to remove the turn signal switch.

Exhaust Manifold giving me trouble


If you have a Drill Machine and access to the snapped bolt, then drill a hole smaller the bolt size in the cetre of the bolt, then insert the Bolt Extractor tool in the centre of bolt, lightly hit it with hammer so it grab the bolt.Now with proper size of spanner tight Extractor Tool in side the snapped bolt by moving the spanner anti clockwise, In this way you can remove the snapped bolt. Note: The ribs or threds of Extractor Tool are opposit to the threads of the normal bolt. So you tight the Extractor Tool, you are unscrewing the snapped bolt.

Need to remove steering lock from the column


If you can get someone to help, you can have them press down on the metal lock plate and you can then remove the small wire snap ring on the post.using a small pick or screwdriver. There is a too for this but I made one from a large thick flat washer with two drilled & threaded holes with 1/4 " bolts.(looks like an odd little puller) I adjust it against the plate and use the column nut to depress the unit to access the snap ring.

How to get a broken bolt out so i can put on the harmonic balancer

You will need to use thing called an "easyout" or  "eziout" 5c4e174.jpg
you have to drill the center of the broken bolt, then gently hammer in the eziout, to then wind the broken stud loose. You may notice that the eziout has the reverse direction thread, so the harder you wind it out, the more it winds into the broken bolt. Use plenty of penetrating oil about the stud, even let it soak for a bit. Just don't break off the eziout, they are super hard, and you will not be able to drill that one out. You can buy then from most hardware stores. Messy, but the only real way to get the the problem solved.I hate it when a stud snaps, it happens all the time, usually the last one to be undone.  Good luck.
