Question about 1995 Buick Skylark

1 Answer

2 questions. I have a 95 skylark with a 2.3l in it. And have 2 questions. The car starts to get hot when it is idling but when I give it gas it cools down. I'm in process of flushing system will that fix it or will it end up being the pump? Question #2 When the car sits for a while it is hard starting like it is loosing fuel pressure. Would that be the fuel pump or a leak somewhere else in the line. Or could it be something else non fuel related? Thanks for any assistance!

Your first question sounds like a coolant flow problem.

  1. Make sure that the cooling fans are running when the car is hot
  2. Check radiator temps in several places( an infared thermometer can be used for this). Radiator temp should not vary more that about 15 degrees from inlet to outlet side of the radiator. If there is a lot of temperature variance a coolant flush might help, but you probably have partially restricted raditor.
  3. Check for coolant flow. While doing the flush remove the radiator inlet hose and start the car. MAKE SURE THE COOLANT TEMP IS NOT HOT. If there is lots of flow the water pump is pumping.
  4. Check operation of the thermostat. It is a good idea to replace the thermostat whenever doing cooling system repairs.
For your second question you also seem to be going in the right direction. The fuel pump has a check valve in it that can fail and cuase lack of fuel pressure on start up.

If you do have a fuel leak it will cause the same concern. Make sure that there are no fuel leaks.

Another possibility for this concern could be low battery voltage due to a weak battery, or corroded battery terminals or cables.

Do I have a bad fuel pump

Not symptoms of a pump. Sounds more like a bad idle air control valve. run some fuel system cleaned in it and run a full tank of gas to see if it changes.

does the temperature gauge show engine is very hot? could be a stuck thermostat, did you check for engine codes? this can be checked for free at most chain auto stores and give you insights into the problem.

1992 chevy truck wanting to run hot and then gets rough idling like it is going to die out have to give it gas

So you attack the overheating problem first before you blow an engine.

Thermostat, fan clutch, water pump, blockage in cooling system or low coolant level are some of the possibilities.
Is the gauge showing hot when it is overheating ?

Well what now?

Could be a faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor, Idle Air Control Motor, just needs a tune-up, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, bad spark plug, faulty computer... hard to tell. Take it to a shop to figure out what is wrong with it and if you are able, fix it yourself, otherwise let the shop fix it.
