My 1985 720 pickup with a z24 engine will seldom start when it is warm with the ignition switch. It will spin over very well but will not start. I can push it and it starts immediately. It seems as if the starter is taking too much fire for some other components to allow the engine to run. I repeat, it spins over very well but it is as if there is no fuel or spark while the starter is engaged. By the way, there is no smell of gas that indicates it is flooded.

When your engine is CRANKED the voltage/curent feed to the starter is very high that the IGNITION SYSTEM DOES NOT GET THE REQUIRED VOLTAGE.
When the car is pushed it will start immediately as the full voltage is applied on the coil for a good spark.
So you must check the battery, the battery terminals, the ground connections and the starter motor.
If the starter motor has worn out bushes/brushes/pinion then it will drain more current as the starter is turned.
Since there is no firing it is only evident that there will be flooding. So remove plugs and flush out before the engine is cranked.

How do I adjust the rocker arm bolts for the valve lash on a 1985 Nissan 720 pick up Z24 engine

Guys he has a Z24, Not KA24, Z24 for one, Is carbed and has older lifters and valves. They need to be tuned to spec within a certain specific limit and the cams must be rotated in certain positions when doing different valves, etc... Shouldnt take very long normally and its not a hard process but if you have a tick, you really should get it checked out. Btw, the Z24 engine's idle isnt controlled by ecu at all or else the carb wouldnt need an idle adjustment screw.

1987 Nissan Pickup with Z24 Engine, Started to have rough Idle when Cold, I put new plugs all 8 Cap and Rotor, Checked hoses for Vacumm Leaks, When It warms up It Improves a little.

The coil wires may be inter changed or the one coil might not be friing. the intake cam in the most senseitive so if one coil is'nt firingyou can switch the coils as they are the same part and put it in the other coil wire and the other set of primary wires and put it all back together If it now fires on the exhaust side the coil is bad and just but a new coil if it still only runs on the same side you may be having troble with the distrubuter pickup. If you are a reman distrubutor from an auto parts store is the way to go as they have a warrentee to be good and the common man has the skill or the tolls to rebuild the distrubutor with a new pickup.

Intermintent starting in cold weather

I had the same issue with a S-10 blazer that by wiggling the key while trying to start the truck the warning lights would come on and the engine would start. We replaced the ignition switch and solved the problem.
