Question about 1987 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes Benz 190 Class

1 Answer

1997 catera On some starups( maybe 10 out of 50) the battery will not charge, lights are dim and idling is rougher. Giving it a little gas starts the charging. If you drive away without giving gas when this occurs it will not charge. Restarting starts the charging. Otherwise the charging is fine according to the gauge.. However it has gone through 3 batteries in the last 2 years. Good day. I bought this MBZ on ebay (cheap), and it has a nerve wrecking issue. Presently the car has a new battery in it, but it acts as if no battery was installed in it...there's no power at all. Prior to this happennig, the car had been draining the battery of power within a 48 hr period, and I normally have to recharge the battery, or drive it daily to keep the battery full. But now, even with a fully charged or new battery in it the car its now dead. The power its not flowing through. What else besides clean battery terminals, good ground cable, etc, could be making the car behave like this? Your help will be appreaciated greatly. SIncerely.....Marie.

KEEMO68, thank you. I would like to try your solution, but as I said before, the car its dead and has no power at all. 2 days before car had died it started just fine. 2 days later, I tried to start it and battery was dead...replaced it for a new one and still the same: NO POWER! I am very confussed!!!

    Thank you

I replaced the dead battery in my cadillac seville 1990. There is still no power. The battery is new. Is there a reset button? I don't know what to do.

Well Marie the reason your vehicle is acting this way is because even though you put new battery in you still have to have a viable altenator to run the vehicle. the battery is only used to start the vehicle and run the radio and lights and other accessories. while the vehicle is running the altenator is not only suppose to charge the battery but it is suppose to supply the amprage to energize and coolapse the coil to give the vehicle spark. a bad altenator while driving doesn't charge the battery it drains it . a quick check is to have the vehicle running and then remove the positive battery cable if it dies you know it's the altenator.... please rate this and good luck keep me posted

96 cadillac eldorado etc battery not staying charged when the car is started the battery goes up to 14 when driving and press brake voltage drops 11-12(car may even die) and to 13+ if u give it gas

Does the vehicle start after sitting over night or do you need to jump start it . Is the charge light on ( batt. symbol ) at any time ? Serpentine belt good , tensioner good ? Battery cable connections good an tight and no corrosion ? Battery also good ? That is normal for battery voltage to jump up to 14 volts after starting , alternator is replenishing the battery after starting ,that draws down the battery . Going down to 11 or 12 volts when stopping and almost stalling isn't a charging system problem . You have a idle problem , IAC - idle air control valve or dirty air passage , a vacuum leak . Giving it gas and it going up to 13+ the alternator is working . Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop and have it check .

Today my battery light in the dash come on and for a Little bit when u idle the engine up the light would go off but when idle dwn it come back on i cleaned the batterg terminals ck the water in battery...

You've got a bad alternator. At idle it was not charging but at higher speeds it was still able to charge some. It blew a diode.
Your battery died because it was not being charged.
You should have 12.5 volts on a charged battery with the engine not running. It should not drop below maybe 10volts when cranking and should read around 14volts when running if your alternator is working.

CAR IS NOT CHARNGING THE BATTERY BUT WHEN I DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHILE RUNNING, THE BATTERY CABLES SHOW 14V. AND WHEN I CONNECT IT BACK, THE CABLES JUST SHOW BATTERY VOLTAGE AND IT IS GOING DOWN. WHAT IS...

You problem could be one of two thing a charging problem or a battery dying. yes you can get the voltage but not get the amperage to charge a battery. Do the lights dim at idle and brighten as you accelerate? Does the car continue to run but the battery goes down after sitting for a while? DO NOT DISCONNECT THE battery cables with the vehicle running as this can result in damage to the charging and other systems. Here are things i look for (1) does the car start on it owns without a jump? (2) does the vehicle idle smooth? A dying battery uses more charging load on the alternator and can result in rough idle and poor performance and gas mileage. (3) this is an odd one but but has helped int he past, does the battery smell like rotten eggs? When a battery is dying it can stink when it is getting a charge from the alternator. To be sure go to your local auto parts store for a free battery and charging check. Takes few minutes and no cost. Hope this helps.

My battery light comes on dim at idle and turns off when i rev the engine

This is indication of the battery being in good shape and almost fully charged. The light on the dashboard is an indication that your dynamo is producing sufficient current, which increases when you rev up and the vehicle is no longer drawing any charge from the battery. On idling, dynamo produces less current, thus to keep the electrical parts running it draws a small amount of charge from the battery thus lighting the indicator is very dim. Do not worry. Everything is OK with your cars engine & battery...........sodeep

2003 montero sport. will not idle since battey boost

sit with foot on gas at steady 3000 rpm, then turn on all your lights, hazard warning lights, heater, and window defrost, if the power drops , then you need a new battery....sometimes the battery power can control the engine idle, the alternator is only for charging the battery, not for running the cars electrics, this is the battery's job

Guages stop and irratic idle with dimming lights

what probley happened the alternator started to heat up alittle to much and caused the belt to spin on the pulley i would go ahead and get the alternator replaaced as soon as possible. as for the lights dimming and the gauges not working you was running off your battery making the vehicle mess up i would also get your battery checked while your at it.

1997 catera

three things spring to mind... slipping belt,,,, voltage regulator or the alternator is going.... you can also unhook the connectors on the alternator... wirebrush them or gently sand them to ensure the best connection.... tighten them back up.... don't over tighten them as you can break a bolt off.

Robert

ps. usually the voltage regulator is built into the alternator... could be replaced seperately or you replace the whole unit.
