I have a 96. Got a vss code. speedo sometimes works, when it goes out, I lose power steering, tranny bangs, speedo, etc. would the sensor work sometimes, or is it the connections, seems like a major problem on these cars.

When driving my 1999 mercury sable the speedo jumps around usually back to zero then maxes out. The trans then does not shift usually out of first. The check engine light comes on as well.

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy

When the car goes to 0, does the speedometer go back to its original position? Does the car shut off when this problem occurs, is there loss of power? Any abnormal shakes, smells? Does it only shift hard or not at all when the speedometer does go to 0 or is this all the time. Is the check engine light, transmission light or any dash lights on "while driving"? Trying to get a better understanding of what is going on. The more information you can provide the better.

I have a 1999 sable and it had the same problems. The speedometer would be going up and down aorund the speed I was going and transmission whould shift hard even when stopped going from reverse to drive it would shift hard. Checked later and notice the tranny fuild was lower than the recomended level. I put some tranny fuild and filled it up so it was in between the recomended. The car has been running without the problem since then. It happenned the first time after running on the highway to the next city it happened after leaving the car running for a few minutes. right after driving away it started with the speedometer going funny then the tranny would slip and it would rev up. The car hasent been on the highway since adding tranny fluid but I could drive about the same distance go 80km/h and stopping and going with no problem shifting.

I have a 1999 mercury sable,v6, i recently bought this car and drove it 150 miles home, no problems, week later, sitting still my husband put the car into low, it began shaking and trying to die, he put it back in drive but after that we could not get the transmission to engage. he shut of the vehicle, turned it back on immediately and the transmission worked fine, next day while driving only about 10 minutes the transmission stop working and was whinning, pulled over, turned car off, turned it back on, the transmission worked for about 15 minutes. we got it home by turning the car on and off. the problem did worsen though, turn car on and the transmission only lasts a couple of minutes now. when it is working, transmission works great. to make transmission work you just have to turn car off then back on. any ideas

My transmision slips and the speedo quits working at the same time in my 1998 mercury sable

Hello wsarah03,

There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle, that is a good place to start. The VSS tells the powertrain management system when and how to shift the transmission and also gives the speedometer it's signal.

From your description that the speedometer quit working at the same time I would suspect the a faulty VSS.

netvan

I have a 1995 sable and the speedo quit and down shifts hard any ideas

Probably the speed sensor on the tranny, but may be the gears inside. The part is only $20 and a quick do it yourself, so I recommend replacing it to see if that does it. If not, you're into the tranny to fix little nylon gears, etc. Please let me know if you have questions.

Transmission

You say the speedometer doesnt work either? I would suspect a bad vehicle speed sensor.

Sounds like you might have lost the tranny,or at least the shift solinoids inside the tranny.

1995 honda accord speedometer and odometer not working

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.

The transmission is should be controlled by the tcm "transmission control module". The first item to check would be a good visual inspection. If all seems in the norm, then the fluid condition and level. You have to check the transmission level when the car is running at operating temp and in park. If that is ok, the next item would be to have the code read. Autozone will scan your car for free. Once you have a code, it may give a hint as to what system is acting up. That is where I would start.

Check the transmission fluid first. it sounds like one of the clutch plates is sticking.

If you shift into second after you've stopped, can you get the car moving?
