Question about 2003 Ford Crown Victoria

4 Answers

Headlight problem. Hello, guys. I have a 2003 Crownvictoria, police car. My headlight goes off suddenly in the middle of the road. Sometimes it goes off just like that, sometimes it goes off when I run over a bump, other times it goes off when I hit the break and slow down. I don't know what is wrong. Please help me. I have noticed also, sometimes the headlight comes on when I turn the turn signal light on, or when I just turn the headlight switch on and off. I don't know what is wrong with it.....Please help. I talked to a technician and he said " You need to get a headlight box, and that costs about $400.00". I am looking for a solutions, before I go ahead and pay arms and legs......... Thank youi.

My Dad is having the same problem with his 03 Vic. It is the relay on the LCM (Lighting Control Module) heating up. The options are sauldering a new relay on the LCM for a few bucks or pay $400 for a new LCM.

If you still have the receipt, or had the repair done by Ford, they will reimburse your Dad for the repair! Contact your Ford dealership for the form, and submit it before the end of October, 2014. (Ref: Customer Satisfaction Program 14N01) or call Ford at 1 (866) 436-7332.

If the high and low beams do not come on, yet the lights do energize when you hold the "flash to pass" lever towards you, then it probably is the LCM (Light Control Module...) And there is now VERY GOOD NEWS!!! Ford just started fixing them for FREE!!! (Ref: Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 14N01) Ford/Lincoln/Mercury has finally decided to deal with the rat-nasty LCM's they have been putting out. I just got the letter on this from Ford last week. Without starting a safety recall, (as they should,) they are extending the warranty on the LCM (based upon VIN number,) to 15 years or 250,000 miles whichever comes first. AND if you paid earlier for this replacement and have the receipt, they will REIMBURSE you for the repair provided it was done before the notice came out. The window to be reimbursed for an earlier repair looks to be between April 1st, 2014 to October 31st, 2014. This window also applies if your car is under 15 years, yet has exceeded 250,000 miles. Ford's LCM replacement is completely without charge for parts and labor. Retail owners should have their VIN number handy and call the local Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership for an appointment. They say it should take a half a day yet could be longer due to dealer "service scheduling requirements." They will only replace LCM's that do not work, but mine lasted 10 years before it started acting up. This gives Ford a way to show concern, without really dealing with the 1000's of LCM's that will fail after this window closes in the future. Ford only "invented" their LCM after their service departments were losing money on a system that smaller repair shops could easily fix. Nice to have a little black box that they could unplug and swap out so they could charge $800-$1000 in parts and labor then repair at the factory with three $10 relays. Anyway if you have any questions about this "un- recall" you may contact the Ford Customer Relationship (I'm in a "relationship?") Center at 1 (866) 436-7332 either they or the dealer can tell if your vehicle is covered if you have the VIN number handy. IN THE MEANTIME. Should you need to get granny to the hospital at night, you can try this AT YOUR OWN RISK. The LCM on my 2003 is located about 18" directly above the gas pedal under the back of the dash... Turn on the lights and give the LCM a tap with your foot. This will often engage the cheap Ford relays and the lights will come on. But you should make that appointment with the dealer before everybody starts fighting for access to the same part. I also don't know if Ford would be willing to call someone a liar if he claimed his headlights stopped working because he thought it is just a matter of time before the lousy relays in his LCM failed, since this is intermittent, and asked for an LCM replacement under this warranty as well. That is why this should be a RECALL, and not just some bean-counter's way of slithering out from all of the angry customers that demand action today. My Grand Marquis is really a fantastic car, but having to drive 50 miles home on narrow country roads with one terrified hand while holding the "flash to pass" arm with the other, and risking my life because Ford played it cheap with some relays on their flagship chassis for a decade or more, really makes you wonder what they were thinking. Remember: You have to take your car to a DEALERSHIP to get this fixed for free under warranty. DO NOT TAKE IT TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP unless you just want to throw your money away!

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2003 FORD CROWN VICTORIA P-71. AND FOR THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS I REACH UNDER THE DASH WHERE THE LCM IS LOCATED( ABOVE YOUR RIGHT KNEE) AND LIGHTLY TAP UP, AND THIS WILL RESET THE RELAY, ITS WORKED FOR ME..THESE PARTS SHOULD BE RE-CALLED!!!

I FIGURED OUT BY ACCIDENT, " CAUSE IT MADE ME SO MAD!!" IF YOU REACH UNDER THE THE DASH TO THE RIGHT OF WHERE YOUR RIGHT KNEE SHOULD BE, IF YOU LIGHTLY HIT UP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LCM, WELL IT RESET MY CAR.

SO I DON'T RECOMMEND DOING THIS FOREVER, BUT IF YOU ARE STUCK ON A BUSY HIGHWAY, IT WORKS TO GET YOU SAFE!!!!

It may be the "box" but I'm not sure what he is referring to - a whole pile of electronics, or just the switch. I'd lean toward a shorting switch first. You can find them in any Crown Vic of that vintage at a salvage yard (or probably a Grand Marquis as well -same car). Pick one up for around $10 and swap it in and see if it works.

Ford put the headlight relays inside the LCM, instead of near the fuseblock like they used to in the good old days. You can tap a failed LCM with your foot. (It's just above the gas pedal,) and hear the relay engage with the light switch on. Ford is replacing the LCM for free now give the dealership your VIN# and they will tell if your car applies. Free parts and labor! Just call before the end of October, 2014 as the window will begin to close for some cars then. They will also reimburse you if you paid for an LCM repair/replacement before April of 2014.

Well you have replaced the 2 obvious causes.....Fuses and light switch, I would use a cicuitry tester to see if you are getting a live feed to the switch, if live coming in then the switch is still faulty if live not coming in then wiring could be burnt out or broken!

Why is my drivers side headlight so much brighter than my passenger side headlight on my 2000 jeep cherokee sport

Some headlights are designed with one side actually brighter, then both are "aimed" to create a pattern of optimal illumination on the road ahead. Since your driver's side cast down along the middle of the road further (probably) with the passenger side "flooding" along the side of the road, this may be the explanation.

Replace the headlight dimmer switch on the steering column and check the connector to it fro signs of overheating, replace connector and switch as one repair. Do not use crimp connectors, solder all wires as needed and use shrink tube to insult the solder joints.

Headlights goes out while driving down the road at night.

Sounds like the lighting control module is bad. You can replace it for about 400 bucks. Or you can bypass the headlight circuit to it a wire the headlights to a relay.

Drl starts buzzing right headlight does not come on

the buzzing is the relay driven by the daytime running light module.
the module is under the left side of the dash by the fuse box,but above it and more to the middle.right above your left knee about 8 inches or so.
