I would make that assumption. Get a Fuel Gauge on it.

sounds like you need to change sending unit in the gas tank

Normally the sending unit gets replaced,, maybe he should have checked that first

what color is the smoke? sounds like air/fuel ratio is off! that could be a vacuum leak, IF air/fuel is off!
the gauge not working is your sending unit in the gas tank!

it could be as easy as replacing plugs and wires..but first check every single small diameter vacuum line you have as these get old the crack and get brittle i had a rough idle once and found a cracked vacuum line leading to my MAP sensor. i just cut off the worn end and just shoved it back on and it fixed it. Also its not very likely, but you do mention something about fuel gauge... so if you"ve never replace your fuel filter i'd spend the tim if to replace that as well. if its the new style with plastic clips, you just take a pair of pliers and squeeze and pull to release..but release pressure on gas cap before trying to replace the filter. can i get a very helpful thanks.

sending unit is in the gas tank. you must take down the gas tank and remove the fuel pump/ sending unit assembly

The gauge float inside the gas tank may be bad.

could be you have a broke fuel sending unit or its loose.

Check all fuses and relays. As far as the gas gauge, you may need a new fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or the float on the fuel pump is loose or came off from ear and tear.The mirrors: check the fuses; also, check, or have the button panel in the door checked to ensure the connection are secure. May need a new switch for the mirrors. I am not familiar with this vehicle; but this is what I suggest doing to solve the issues.
