Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette

1999 Olds Silhouette

I have a 99 Silhoutte Premiere that has some really quirky problems. My tail lights, back break lights, and back turn signals don't work, and new bulbs don't help. Neither do new fuses. When I break, my FRONT parking lights get brighter and my headlights dim! Also when I break, with a turn signal on, both turn signals INSIDE and the light for the clock and radio start to blink really fast. When I take my foot off the break, the blinking stops. Is this a common problem, and how can I fix it?
I bought the van new in 99 and really like it, but it seems like all the electrical is going out. It started with then VCR, then the power side door, the overhead components with the compass, etc, the lights on the steering wheel, the lights on the radio (except for the time and radio station), and then front power outlet. All the other electrical seems ok.

I have pretty much the same problems you have listed. Mine seem to come and go though.....

I have a similar problem. Initially the left turn signal blinked really fast, which usually indicates a bulb is out, but in my case all light bulks are working. As time went on, the two turn signal indicators on the dashboard came on when I put the car in reverse AND the brake paddle was pressed. Now the problem became worse. During driving the external turn signals would stop working and the (the clock) time display in the dashboard would disappear whenever I brake. The turn signal and the time display would come back when the brake is released.

I believe that you have a bad module in your steering column if your lights and blinkers operate on a shifting lever. if they are in a dash the switch could be faulty or the main wire harness has a bad connector or loose/frayed wires. iw ould look under the dash. over time the connecters get loose or they get cracked from the heat they get from the fire wall or heater system and have a tendency to short . this would be a good start make sure all the connections are tight and there is no dicoloration or burn marks.....please rate this........thanks

I had this same problem about four years ago. It cost me almost $1000 to find the problem. The problem was with the wiring harness to the rear lights. Somehow water had gone into the wiring and started causing the issues. There is a replacement harness that allows for the old wiring to be removed and the new one to be connected. Check the rear lights for sights of corrision on the connectors.

Your problem is either a bad bulb in the tail light/brake lights or your turn signal switch is bad. I'm more inclined to say that the problem is the turn signal switch and you need to replace it.

99 silhouette.all bulbs are in working order.right (not left) signal flashes fast when headlights are on and even worse when brakes depressed(lights on or off).also lights on both rears are real strange on...

I had similar symptoms - rapid flashing of directional when headlights on and brake depressed when making a left turn, both directional indicators in dash light dimly when brake depressed, "Check Traction Control System" indicator On even with ATC turned Off and "strange" indications in tail lights.

Check the pins in the connector at the Lamp Holder Assembly for your Rt. Tail Light for arcing and corrosion. (The female pin is in the vehicle harness connector and the male is part of the Lamp Holder Assembly.) If found, because the male connector is part of the Lamp Holder Assembly, you'll have to replace the Lamp Holder Assembly and the harness section coming in from the vehicle containing the female connector.

I just repaired this problem in the left tail light on my '01 van with a part from a '99 van I found at a local salvage yard.
