Petrol needle not working - 318 BMW Cars & Trucks

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2009

I got in my car the other day and the petrol needle just decided not to work, and is sitting below the red light.

  • Sorry guy, I need more info....Is your vehicle fuel injection or does it have carburetors....What is that is happening to the car? Is it flooding or not getting any fuel.... we'll try to help you when we have more answers

Hi justinf7757'
Sorry for not understanding your question, until i read thru the answer that was posted by keemo68....I think it's a difference of terminologies....I agree with keemo and would like to add a few other places for you to check....As you know the BMW fuel gauge is connected to the navigation computer, so try the management system which is found in the fuse box....There's also fuses in the same place that could be checked out....You may be able to get the items to connect and check from a breakers yard....here where I am the guy's will let us do that, I don't know about where you are.....

It could be one of 2 things , either your gauge is faulty or the sending unit is the problem. either you can replace these yourself or have a qualified tech do it for you...please rate this

It depend how much fuel have been used.If you was driving on the reserve fuel. Then that 10 euro fuel just have covered your reserve fuel to be honest.
And you will hardly see the needle move..

Car do not want to start petrol not going to the carburator

The carb has to be serviced. Could be clogged filter to the carb reservoir or the float system needle is stuck closed. The reservoir has a float similar to a toilet cistern.

In my toyota corolla 2003 of 50 litres petrol capacity in the fuel guage thre are totally 17 lines including 4 thick lines. There are no lines in between E and 1st thick line. Similarly there are no lines...

The fuel level sensor in the tank is not linear, meaning it doesn't have the same equally spaced indication between E and F . The shape of the tank has a lot to do with the reading also. The needle will move more rapidly when the tank is below 1/2 full. When the low fuel light comes on there should be almost 3 gallons left in the tank 2 1/2 which are usable.

Carburettor on volkswagen golf 2000 model 1600 leaks petrol

fuel leaks from a carby when the fuel pump is working indicates a stuck or faulty needle and seat assembly in the carby allowing the bowl to over flow . check the fuel pump pressure is not excessive and remove the needle and seat assy and check needle for cracked rubber around needle or something as simple as a hair stopping the needle from seating properly

My holley 600 is leaving petrol in manifold only when car is at operating normal temp , when you turn car off you can see petrol still dripping into bowl ,eg secondries

maybe the needle and seat is bad/worn out. It could be letting gas pass through. A rebuild kit is fairly inexpensive. (20-30 dollars)
