Question about 1994 Pontiac Sunbird

1 Answer

Automatic transmission i've had this problem for awhile now, but since its only my emergency car, i've put this off. but now i'm thinking with gas mileage and all, i need to get this pontiac road worthy. when i drive this car, and make a hard left turn, the transmission slips, and when driving it for a few miles, the transmission will slip, when i step on the gas. i've changed the transmission fluid and the filter and havn't noticed any residual shavings or any metallic parts in the pan or fluid, and its not black ?

If it's a utility vehicle... a quick cheap fix is to buy a liter (or whatever the size is) of transmission conditioner. I may have the wrong name but basically what it does is thicken the tranny fluid. it has allowed me to put another 20,000 kilomters on my van.

I have a Kia sephia 2000 model automatic trans. When I try to give it the gas it barely moves. What could be the problem I put in new spark plugs I think two of them replaced a fuel pump?

It's possible the torque converter in the transmission is faulty. It could be shift solenoids inside the transmission too. The transmission control module may be causing trouble too.

How to TEST A TORQUE CONVERTER ON A Automatic Transmission

Symptom : chattering or vibration while idling, and in Park.
Transmission sluggish upon Accelaration..

Step 1: chock Block all your wheels, and put your Auto emergency brake on (applied).

Step 2: You step on your gas pedal with engine in Drive, Full throttle. do not hold your regular brake pedal...Hold gas pedal down for 2 seconds your car will try to move. All wheels must not slip.

Step 3: watch your rpm gauge, your stall should be between 2400-2800 rpm depending on specification of manufacturer..
a low reading isbad stator assembly,
a high reading is a slipping one way clutch..

Transmission is going in gear every time but the car won't drive every time

Have a look at the automatic transmission fluid.
Under the hood should be 2 long dipsticks, usually they have a colored plastic handle so you can see them more easily.
You will need to identify them, perhaps ask a friend for help.
One dipstick is for motor oil, the other for automatic transmission fluid.
The automatic transmission fluid should be redish in color, that is a dye put in the fluid so you know it is not motor oil.
Check that fluid, your owner's manual in the glove box will tell you whether to warm the eingine up first before you check it.
If the fluid is low, add some with a long funnel, only add a pint at a time, and check it about 5 minutes after you add it.
Repeat this until it shows full.
Car parts stores sell quarts of automatic transmission fluid.
If you pull the dipstick from the transmission and it is not low, and the fluid is clean (not black coloured), you may either have a transmission that has failed, or your brakes may be sticking ( like the emergency brake is on).
Be blessed

Automatic Transmission shifts hard from first to second gear. Is it the shift solenoid?

Put some transmission conditioner in and run for awhile, could be a sticking spool in the valve body from shellac buildup.

sounds like a vapor lock. older cars needed a set of points . they kept firing times in sync with fuel delivery , valves opening/closing try that.

Check the color of your automatic transmission fluid - it should be a bright pink or light red. if it looks dark red or a brownish color, you need to have your system flushed and replace with new fluid. Have your mechanic check your modulator valve.
