I have the same problem with my 2003 VW took it in too see if they could glue it back into place and two places have told me that it needs to be replaced?

  • txslullaby86 Sep 23, 2008

VW does this on purpose!  I went to Master CraftsMen and he took one look at my car and asked if the warranty was out.  Of course it is, he said they give us the 4 yr warranty because they know high ticket items like the top go out in 4 yrs!!! He said it is very common and that you have to replace the top because it is heat-sealed and there is no way to get the same seal on it.  I found a top for it online at Ebay for $530.  now i have to get it put on.

Yeah, I just noticed the top is pulling away from the bottom right corner of the glass in the rear window. It's not bad yet so I'm hoping I caught it early enough to stop it from getting too bad too fast. How did the gorilla glue experiment work? Has anyone else tried a different epoxy? Thanks!

I have the same problem. I got acetone and removed the old glue from the glass. Then  I reglued it with gorilla glue. This stuff explands into this yellow hard foam, so you have to be careful not to put on too much and not to get it on the outside of the top. I stuffed the back window area inside the car with pillows to push the glass up, then carefully applied the glue to the edge of the glass with a paintbrush. Then I covered the glued area on the outside with plastic bags of kitty litter to hold the fabric against the glass. Takes 4-5 hours to dry. Worked beautifully so far. Got a little thick and a couple places and I removed the excess with a razor blade. Then on the inside, I applied a small amount of the same glue with a paintbrush to the inside of the little track round the window. Then inserted the edge of the headliner into the track. Did all of this work with the top slightly opened to take the pressure off. So far so good. One week and counting. Hopefully it will hold up to the heat and sun.

I had the same problem with my 2003 bug. A new convertible top is not necessary. What is needed is new clips around the window that hold the top in place. I demanded new clips at the dealer and it did the trick. Top goes up and down without separating from the rear window. However...warning to all you convertible bug owners. I had separation of the inside lining near that that wing that comes up when putting the top down. There is a piece down in the wing that holds a cord which keeps the inside lining in place. That piece is PLASTIC and has been replaced several times. I have given up and just tuck the lining up in before putting down the top.

I had the same problem. I fixed mine with ureathane sealant (black). It is made by 3M and comes in a tube for use with a caulk gun. I got mine from Advance Auto. Use masking tape to get a nice clean edge. Scrap off the excess with a razor blade once it has set up for about 24 hrs.
Hope this helps.

2004 Beetle Convertible, rear window is getting unglued

I had the same problem with the window in my 2003 beetle convertible. I purchased 3m windo-weld super fast A10E2A and single step glass primer A13B5A also 3m. I ordered it online from Auto Body Toolmart. It was very easy to do and is in there really tight. Unlatch the top just enought to release the tension.
1. clean the window and remover any old glue with a razor blade
2. use acetone to make sure the rim around the glass is clean
3. apply thr gass primer and let dry
4. apply the glue which is black so put on a thin bead and I used gloves so I could make sure it was on both the window and also the fabric of the top. You must work fast because it sets up in 15 minutes.
5. Then take blue masking tape and secure the glass by taping all around the top. up and down and from side to side.
6. allow to dry for 6 to 12 hours. the clean off any extra glue with a razor.
The total cost was $39 dollars instead of having to buy a new tp

The window is unglued on the bottom and sides.

The dealer can fix virtually any problem with a late model car. But, if you use epoxy or trim adhesive, you may be able to do the repair yourself.

I once used 'gel' super glue to exactly meter and put glue where it belongs and get an instant bond on rubber to glass or rubber to metal bonding.

How expensive is it to replace an 05 bug rag top?

i've worked on auto upholstery for years and if the rear window is glass and the rubber holding it in place has seperated from the top then the top has shrunk and will have to be replaced . but if the glass and all of the fabric will still proximate then it should be repairable if you can send me a pic of the damage i can better evaluate the problem because a total replacement is between 1500 to 1800 dollars done right my e-mail is jimmyjam52981@yahoo.com

find an auto upholstery shop that works on convertibles, they should be able to repair that as long as the top is in good condition

2000 corvette convertible top rear window came

This is a common problem with many cars. It is delamination. If the window is loose in spots, it can often be repaired with urethane adhesive like glass shops use for windshields. If the glass is more than 30% delaminated, chances of fixing it are slim. With the glass all the way out, you need a new top. Karl at topgunwon.com

The rear glass has come unglued and the convertible top does not want to stay attached is there any way to fix this without having to replace the entire top?

Try gluing it back together with 3M super weatherstrip and gasket adhesive, (you can get this at Auto Zone). This stuff bonds like crazy!!!! Follow the directions on the box.

Convertible top

It worked. Still very stuck with no signs of coming loose and I did it about a month ago. Just dont use too much and apply it with a little paint brush like an artist would use. You can always add more, but if you use too much, it will look messy. I used a little much in two places and when it expanded, you could see the yellow foam it makes at the edge of the fabric. But I just shaved it off with a razor blade and it looks fine. After doing the outside, gluing the glass to the fabric, i also glued the headliner in place as well. I lowered the top a few inches to take the pressure off, and put just a little glue in the track around the inside of the window, then put the edge of the headliner in the track. Left it overnight and it has not come loose since. I think getting this headliner reattached is important cause the headliner actually pulls the glass against the fabric top, which takes pressure off of the glue holding the window in place. In retrospect, maybe if i had fixed the headliner earlier, the window might not have come unglued in the first place. Shame on VW for not dealing with this issue better. Replacing the entire top is ridiculous!

2004 Volkswagen convertable top

The window coming unglued is not an unusual problem for that car.
The bad news? To fix it correctly, you have to replace the top (like $2,500+)
I did automotive trim work (upholstery) for 19 years and have seen a number of problem with convertible top back windows (not just VW).
But because of the design of the top, the back window insert style, and the heated back window, they don't come cheap.
You can try taking it by a local trim shop (listed in the phonebook under automotive upholstery) and see if they have a "patch" fix they can do, but I can say, no patch is going to fix it permanently.
Sorry I don't have better news, but it is the nature of that beast.
