Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

1998 Jeep cherokee 4x4 4.0L turn's over will not start.

My 98 cherokee four wheel 4L will not start. it will turn over all day long i just put a new starter on last month been running fine since saturday. but that was the last time. the fuel pump is working it is getting fuel to the rail. but no fire i removed one spark plug wire and held it close to the plug as we tried to crank it. But i could not see a spark. so i replaced the plugs,wires,cap and rotor.
And after a big waist of time an hard earned money and 4mile round trip walk to and from the autozone she still will not crank! i do not have any access to engine diagnostic machine it is my only transportation right now. I dont know what else to do.

Hi,

A workaround in lieu of a diagnostic machine is to check with the use of a DVM. Somec omponents that should be getting voltage on key to IGN and/or when cranking:

  • ignition coil - one terminal goes to the IGN B+ and should measure constant 12VDC once the key is turned to ON/RUN, the other end goes to the power train control module, the voltage here must be pulsing when the engine is cranked/started/turned over. Here is a good generic instructional step by step;;
  • if there is no IGN B+12 going into the coil, check the ASD relay;
  • if both checks out, check/replace the crank position sensor mounted on the drivers side / top of the transmission housing. Look specially for loose/corroded terminals/connectors.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

You need to connecth the car computer to a code reader. In return the code reader will give you error codes that tell you what is wron with the car.
If you have tested all the rest, it is probably a problem with the car computer control module.

    I am not sure of what you mean by replace a new starter, I assume you are talking about the ignition barrel, not the starter motor. If you have not replaced ignition, test it that can also be cause for the problem.
    Particularly, if you replaced ignition, plugs,wires,cap and rotor, and you still do not get spark after this, then it is a problem with the computer module that is controlling distribution, or just a bad wiring problem.

    If you want to scan the computer yourself you need an ODB1 code reader, if you do not have the repair manual I also suggest buying the Haynes manual, this will tell you how to scan computer, and explain how to troubleshoot error codes.
    Here you buy the manual:

    The module is called Engine Control Module (ECM), and is the main computer checking all car functions.

    Then if you even replaced the coil, what remains are computer and wiring.
    An odb1 good scanner (basic ones do not have all functions) now starts at $150 or so, see this one(it was over $300 months ago): Equus 3120 Innova Diagnostic Code.

How to shift a 1998 jeep grand cherokee into 4 wheel drive

Four low is almost never used. I use it on very steep rocky or muddy trails in the woods or to pull someone out of mud or a ditch. Though some will shift standing still it is best do do this while rolling. Four high can be shifted at low speeds of 2 to about 35mph (higher also but not really good idea) Low can only be shifted between 2 to 10mph. If you find yourself stuck and unable to shift because you aren't rolling you can also turn the engine off, engage the transfer case and re-start. That avoids having the gears clashing together. Best rule is if it begins to grind, don't force it.

Neutral is only used when you need to tow the jeep. Normal two wheel driving is done in 2h. To engage 4wheel drive keep rolling slowly and engage either 4h or 4L. Generally 4L is almost never used as it is for pulling weight like a vehicle stuck in a snowbank. If it does not return to 2h when you go back into two wheel operation, many times it will if you back up about ten or twenty feet. Don't engage 4 wheel drive while standing still. and never force the lever if you hear grinding.
