I have a 2003 GMC 2500HD 6.0liter vortech 4speed automatic. I was going down a steep grade and the transmission started making a really loud grindy whindy noise and then stops when you put gas on or slow right down. at first I thought it was an engine brake but the truck actually sped up a little when the noise happened. DO you know what this is?

SOURCE: 2004 GMC Yukon Denali Awd humming sound in front of truck

The Denali's are really susceptible to front dif. wear and failure. Because it is AWD, the front dif is always working unlike a 4WD. GM, in order to lighten up the front end built the front dif in aluminum. If it was the same as the rear, it would be bullet proof, but much heavier. After about 80,000 miles it is common to have bearings failing. Remove the drain plug which happens to be magnetic. You may see more than just the normal fine filings. You will likely see larger chunks of metal some of which is not even magnetic but will drain out with the oil. You are likely looking at a $1500 rebuild. It will get much louder and run for a long time before it really goes south.

When i put truck in tow haul it wants to start down shifting and wont up shift

Your transmission computer is telling the transmission that the load for that gear is incorrect and will automatically put the transmission in the gear that will not overload your engine. Most of the time when you are going up hill the transmission will do the same. It is just trying to save you an engine rebuild.

2003 Sierra 2500hd transmission or transfer case making grinding noise (sounds like a bearing going bad) it becomes louder when i give it gas. i checked the fluid in the transfer case which looked ok, i...

Sudden grinding noise with no prior warning * Primarily in 2nd gear, behavior in reverse may be abnormal; sunshell is fractured. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

* Reaction planetary is worn out due to high miles or insufficient lubrication. Not a critical failure, but not a good sign either. R&R sooner rather than later.

* Either a torrington bearing or a planetary bearing is on its way out. Trans will eventually die a loud, catastrophic death. Cheaper to rebuild now (saves further damage to hard parts), but requires R&R. It is drivable until it breaks.

Good luck and thank you for using fixya.
