Question about 2000 Chevrolet Blazer

Gas Gauge or Sending Unit

I have had two 2000 Chev Blazers and both of them had this problem. The gas gauge stops working. It shoots from empty to full, never 1/2, always one exteme or the other. It happens when I am driving or sitting still, it does not matter how full or empty, just kinda of randomly darts back and forth. I even had 2005 Trailblazer and it started doing this about the time I sold it.

    gas gauge not working

I have the same problem on my 2000 Chevy TrailBlazer.
CHEVROLET knows this issue but, refuses to fix it.
But they did sent me a letter that describes the same problem in my 2003 Suburban..."This Letter is intended to make you aware that your vehicle could develop a condition where one or more of the instrument panel gauges needle may stick, flutter, or become inoperative This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and the fuel gauge."

GM was sued and the class action settlement only pertains to model year 2003-2005 CHEVROLET-Avalanche, Silverado, Suburbans, Tahoe; GMC-Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL; CADILLAC-Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, manufactured on or before december 31, 2004

Which leaves me out of luck!!!

I have a 98 GMC K1500 about a year ago I heard a Fzzt and noticed the gas guage started fluttering. It still reads correctly but constantly flutters about 15 degrees back and forth. Also about 3 months after this the fuel pump went out. I replaced it and now 6 month later the new fuel pump seems to have failed. I was wondering if they were related problems to the guage? truck has 120000 and this is the only problem I have had.

my gas gauge in my car fluttered back and forth between full and empty until 1 day it remained on empty. I don't know the reason for this problem. i propably wil end up take the car to the dealership to get it fixed.

Thank you all for your answers. Recent update... the fuel pump went out. I replaced the pump with the complete kit because as Mike2000blz writes above..... the sending unit is built into the pump. I now have a gas gauge that works.

More than likely it's the gauge it sets in a circuit board and sometimes the contacts get worn and with vibration it voltage spikes it and then it fails. very seldom is it the sending unit in the tank. please rate this...thanks

Fuel sending unit is built into the fuel pump on all s-10 series blazers and pickups. this is a known issue as stated above. the only fix is to replace the fuel pump. My guage never worked on my 2000 blazer since I bought it. finnaly the pump died. wehen I replaced it I noticed the armature for the fuel sending unit was loose to the point the sensor wasnt makeing contact with the potentiometer. after replacing the pump, everythings worked 4.0.

You do not have to replace the complete sending unit/fuel pump module. You can purchase just the fuel level sensor but you are still going to have to remove the fuel module to replace it and most garages will tell you it is best to replace the complete assembly.

Gas gauge staying at empty when tank is full

Spencer, Check all fuses ,plugs and grounding at the tank. The sending unit module, inside the GM's gas tanks were notorious for going bad in this err, when you changed it did you use a quality part? Also the fuel pump sending unit plug/wire harnesses were known issues, so much that replacement pumps would often come with replacement plug to splice into existing harness. Check the attached links, instruction and guides on how to trouble shoot fuel gauge/sending unit, Good luck

Where is a fuel gauge for when your tank is empty located on a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica

It could be the gauge on the dash or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad. If it is the sending unit ,the gas tank will most likely have to be taken out. And if the dash gauge the dash will have to be taken apart. Diagnosis of Stuck Fuel Gauge Is it Gauge or Sending Unit Here is a video how to test it.

Dash gas gauge stops showing proper gas level once it hits half a tank. Then gauge will fluctuate between empty (light will come on), full and anywhere in between but seems fine from full tank to half

If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.

2000 lesabre gas gauge doesnt work

Before assuming it is the tank sending unit, test it. Take the wire off the tank sending unit, (make sure you don't have the pump wires), it should go to empty. Then ground it. When you do that the gauge should go to max. If not, then the gauge is faulty, not the sending unit.

My pontiac Montana has a problem with the fule gauge, it will read full and the next it will reads empty, is this the sending unit?

It's the wire to the sending unit. The unit is in the gas tank and if the problem is in the unit, then you have to drop the gas tank to get to it. Check all the wire harness from the top of the tank to the frame. There is a clip from the wire harness from the tank to the frame and it may be corroded there from the salt in the winter. Can not remember but if there is a ground the tank feeds full and when it's got power it reads empty or it's the other way around. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

You have a fuel gauge sending unit problem, the gauge is not the problem, the sending unit is in the gas tank, u must remove the gas tank to replace it.
