Try turning the adjusters back in until you can get them on, and adjust them thru the slot in the backing plate after please rate -jeff

I was checking back brakes, emergency brakes. The axel on the passenger rear is welded to drum. Why wouldyou do that. Cannnot put check back brakes or install new emergency brakes on back passenger side....


They wouldn't and couldn't, or the rear drum would not turn and the car would not move. You need a special fork tool to go behind the drum and adjust the star fitting in order to release the drum and then you will be able to check the linings and cable.

if the drums were replaced then you have drum brakes the l200 saturns had two options for brakes anti lock brakes it has all disc brakes without anti lock it has disc on front and drum on rear hope this helps

The parking brake cable is not releasing, usually due to corrosion within the cable jacket or inside the drum if it has drum rear brakes. Put the rear end up on jack stands and have a helper push and release the parking brake and watch what the cable is doing on both sides. You should be able to see the hang up. If it is inside the brake drum you may want to try a bit of WD40 applied to the cable where it enters the backing plate. Do not go overboard with it as it will collect inside on the drum's braking surface.

Take tires off then inspect rear brake shoes if okay and not down to the metal service the drums with sand paper and put them back on you might have to replace the drums and shoes!

When the car is cold go to drive off it sounds


As you apply your car brakes, your brake pads/shoes wear against the brake rotors/drums. Rear brakes usually have brake drums. As your brake shoe linings wear (as would be the case for your car), the brake linings from the brake shoes have worn down to metal and they wear into the metal of your brake drums. After you park the car at night, the natural moisture in the air facilitates an oxidation (rusting) process along your brake drums. When you get in your car and take off in the morning, you have a light layer of rust that gets scraped off by your worn brake shoes. This is what is causing that annoying noise you hear in the morning (or after the car has been parked for hours). Simply put, you need a rear brake job. They will also check your front brakes and can let you know how much life you have left up front. If you continue to drive around like this, you'll end up ruining your rear brake drums and this will quickly become more expensive. When you have a rear brake drum job completed, they will likely "turn" your rear brake drums - which means they will put the drums on a mechanical lathe that will scrape any uneven surface into one congruous even surface.

Rear wheel locks up when appling brakes


Hi, check wheel for bad/leaking brake wheel cylinder. An easy way to do this without removing wheel is to look at the outside of the drum from the backside for any brake fluid. If the backside of the drum looks wet, replace wheel cylinder. If it looks dry, remove tire and drum to inspect wheel cylinder for any brake fluid. If rubber boots on end of wheel cylinder appears to be dry, adjust rear brake turning adjusting screw (long bar on bottom with a "star" in center), replace drum, if you cannot put the drum back on easily, back up the screw you turned until the drum goes on easily but without too much slack, start car, apply brake, check drum to see if it can come off easily, if not, repeat until drum is snug, but not tight.
New rear wheel cylinder part avg.: $25-$35 ea.

No parking brakes


If it has rear drum brakes jack up the back of the vehicle and pull off a drum click up the adjusting screw on the bottom a little bit say 5 or clicks then try to put drum back on if it goes on really easily pull it back off and adjust another 5 clicks or so go till drum wont go on and back the adjustment the other way useing a screw driver or something to hold the arm off of the adjusting screw so you can turn the screw back the other direction about 3 clicks till drum goes on snug but not too tight do the same for the other side.If you have rear disc brakes you have to adjust the cable going to the brake caliper adjust it tighter by about a half an inch or so at a time then go push on the e brake pedal it will get a little more resistance behind it after it gets a little tighter put a wheel back on and try to turn it with e brake on if you cant turn it release it try to turn wheel again if you can its adjusted some have a cable for both rear wheels adjust both as needed.

Removal of rear brake drum 2002 ford escape


make sure handbrake is off take wheel off hit the drum with a mallet not steel,as it will brake,hit on outter diametter face of drum, try and rotate as you twist off
