I am unable to remove my steering wheel which appears to be on a staight spline. I have a digram from a GM dealer which shows a snap ring on the shaft but there is no snap ring. I have the puller which is required and have had terrific pressure on the puller.I can not beleive a straigh slpine would be that tight. What am I missing?

Look real close, for that ring is really small.

There is a nut that must be removed to pull the steering wheel off the shaft.above the nut on the end of the shaft there should be a snap ring that is to be removed so the nut can be removed from the shaft.then the puller can be installed to pull the wheel off the shaft.there is another snap ring under the steering wheel that holds a plate to the shaft but this will not stop you from removing the wheel.

  • Anonymous Aug 04, 2011

I have removed many snap rings in my 50 years as a mechanic and there definately is no snap ring. I have a hooked leg puller and I had so much pressure on the puller it pulled the aluminum right through. This is a model GRANAM it appears to be a straight spline and I have trouble beleiving that it can be that tight. My next move will be to drill and tap the housing and use bolts to pull the wheel. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

if you have been an auto tech for 50 years then you know what your looking for.i`ve had 1 in 38 years that a puller wouldn`t budge and with the puller on and pressure pulling i`ve had to hit the end of the shaft with a hammer being careful not to damage the shaft so the wheel will come off.just another suggestion.

REPLACED STEERING GEAR BOX IN 2003 CADILLAC ESCALADE NOW WHEEL IS OFF CENTERED

IF you have a rack and pinion steering pull the steering shaft of the pinion splines and centre the wheels . Centre the wheel and put the steering shaft back on the splines. If it is master splined then centre the steering wheel and adjust each side tie rod until the wheels are centred . (one in -other out ). Remember that when the wheels are straight ahead then the steering wheel will be slightly to the left (USA) to compensate for the camber of the road.. IF a steering box pull the pitman arm off --centre the wheels and the steering wheel and refit the pitman arm

What is the clock spring behind steering wheel and where do i get a new one?

The clock spring is the device that transfer power through the rotating steering wheel to the airbag, horn, and other misc, switches that may be on the steering wheel. Your local dealer will have them. Your local parts store may as well. You will need to remove the airbag and the steering wheel to replace this item. You will need a steering wheel puller, a snap ring plier, and a basic set of tools to complete the project. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Steering wheel column loose, how do i tighten it

The same thing happened on my 1988 Deville. There are 3 Torx screws underneath the turn signal switch that are notorious for
coming loose of time in many GM cars that have the same steering column.

Its a tedious job, lots of small parts that are easy to lose.
And lay the parts out on the ground in the order you took
them out and with the side of the part that goes out facing up.
This will save a lot of trouble.

Here are the basic steps:

1) Make sure the steering wheel is locked and wheels are pointed straight ahead before you start, helps to align everything right when putting parts back together. Leave the
key in the ignition lock

2) Remove horn pad, attached with 2 screws on the back of the
steering wheel. 8mm I think.

3) Release the wire going to the horn. You rotate it and pull
it out. Pill of the horn pad.

4) Remove the steering wheel retaining nut. Pull the steering
wheel. You need a steering wheel puller thats a loaner tool
from Autozone. Remove the 2 spacers that are on top of
a star looking plastic thing, thats the snap ring retainer.
Underneath it is a snap ring that needs to be removed
to remove the spring/other parts under it.

5) The you need to get a steering wheel lock plate puller from auto zone to compress that spring to allow you to remove the snap ring.

6) Carefully look at how every part is oriented before removing
it at this point. Turn the turn signal to the right turn position.

7) Remove the 3 screws that attach the turn signal switch,
1 screw and metal piece that connect the turn signal switch
to the turn signal lever. Remove the screw that holds on the
the hazard flasher knob.

You have to remove everything down to the point where the
steering wheel tilts.

Heres actually a tutorial I found online that will help you.

http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/088020.html

The huy in the tutorial is putting the column together,
so you should start near the bottom of the page.

But you need to get 3 tools that people dont commonly
have:

A steering wheel pivot pin puller, a steering wheel puller,
and a steering wheel lock plate remover. You can borrow
the last 2 from autozone. The pivot pin remover I got at Oreillys
for around $10.

Any questions or need help, I check this page again.
But i will warn you that this is difficult, so if you have any doubts dont do this! But you can do it if you put some effort in.

The left turn signal will not cancel automatically

The left turn cancel return spring has broken. It is part of the turn signal switch. In order to replace you will need to get a steering wheel puller kit, a couple of picks and a snap ring pliers. This will allow you to remove the steering wheel, airbag clock spring, the steering wheel lock plate. and the horn ring. After those are removed you will have access to the turn signal switch. You will see the two springs in the switch. One will definetely no look the the other. The springs can be purchased individually from you local GM dealer. Might as well replace both as long as everything is taken apart.

The column is very loose and wobbly.

Very common in GM columns. You need to remove steering wheel, use special tool that screws onto center shaft then turn the nut to compress springs, then a snap ring has to be removed. Then remove tool. Remove 3 or 4 phillips screws for turn signal and 2 screw to remove turn signal arm. Pull up on turn signal assembly just enough to get access to 3 phillips screw under assembly which should be loose. Tighten these screws and your wobble will be gone. Good luck. The steering wheel can be removed with a harmonic balancer puller or steering wheel puller. The tool to remove snap ring can be purchased at most auto parts stores I believe for between $15 to $20.

I have a 87 blazer s10... the turnswitch /wiper/highbeam switch is broken and is shorting out my brakelights ..i cant seem to get to it.. took the steering weel off but ..?

Unfortunately there are some special tools required you will need to get to the turn-signal switch. Below is the procedure for replacing the turn-signal switch. Generally you can rent the puller from a local auto parts jobber or you can purchase one.
Good luck, let me know how it goes.
Regards,

Many vehicles use a turn signal switch that is separate from the multifunction switch. The steering wheel will have to be removed to gain access to the turn signal switch on these vehicles. The following procedure is a common method of turn signal switch replacement:
  • Place the fender covers on the fenders.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the steering column trim.
  • Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel.

  • Remove the steering wheel and horn collar.
  • Use a suitable puller to remove the steering wheel.
  • With a suitable compressor, compress the preload spring to the lock plate. Compress the spring only enough to remove the snap ring.

  • Use a pick and a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the lock plate, horn contact carrier, and spring.
  • Remove the bolts at the upper steering column support and the upper mounting bracket from the column.
  • Disconnect the turn signal wiring connector.
  • Wrap tape around the wire and connector.
  • Remove the hazard warning knob from the column.
  • Remove the switch retaining screws and remove the switch.

  • Replace the switch and reverse these procedures for reinstallation.

Uneven steering wheel

Off center steering wheel is very common, a good front end man will drive the car/truck and verify that the wheel is centered, it is not a mechanical problem just an adjustment issue, go to an outside shop or another dealer and tell them u just want the wheel straight, remember the road has a slight angle to drain water off, it's called road crown, tell them you want the wheel centered and to take road crown into account when they do it, make sure the front end man double checks the center by means of a good road test on varied road surface, tell them where it is that the off center is most noticeable, all this is from personnel experience, I am a fanatic about the wheel being centered. If u have more questions fell free to ask, sorry for your justified frustration on this issue.
