Need wheel bearing replacement

I have a 2001 Gmc Jimmy and was told that my wheel bearings on both side needs replacement. I've been doing some pricing with auto part stores but it seems that it only comes in a hub assembly. I need to know if I have to purchase the entire hub assembly or could I purchase just the wheel bearing by itself and get it installed. I was told by a mechanic that they have a machine to pop out old bearings and replace with new. Is this true?

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy that is making some odd noises. I went over a very large speed bump, no I was not speeding and it seems to have done some damage. I took it to the local firestone and they said it needed an alignment and the shams need to be filed down. ( i could have some of the incorrect words,,, not good with car stuff). Sometimes I hear a whining coming from the back of the car. After Firestone "says" they corrected it, it is still making the noise. It does not happen all of the time, but when I take it back to Firestone it never makes the noise. I asked the mechanic and he said it could be the bearings...They really don't know. Any ideas?

Unfortunately your bearing assembly is a sealed unit and you have to purchase it as a complete part. they do have a way to change out the bearing at a shop, however the labor cost involved would most certainly be alot more than a replacement it's self. I have come across this problem many times and it's not as easy to switch them out as you have been told. i hope this helps. (note) to repalce them on your vehicle if you don't do the work yourself have a small shop do it not a dealer shop. the cost will be alot less. the labor time should be no more than 2 hrs. that is roughly about no more than 120- 150 dollars for the labor . if the place you take it to quotes you way more than that take it somewhere else... good luck please rate this

Some wheel bearings are pressed into the hub and are available separately. In your case, if no one stocks just the bearing, then you have to buy the hub assembly and have the entire thing changed out.

Wheel bearing right front

I think you must replace the entire hub assembly. You need a shop manual to do this correctly.

Replacing the right wheel bearing how do u remove that hub do u need a special tool for it

is it a 4x4? the wheel bearing comes with a new hub assembley . Just find out what size the front half shaft nut/ lock nut/axle nut- is. its probably a 33mm thats the only special tool you will need. Unscrew it, take your outer tie rod off the spindle/steering knuckle, theres 3 bolts behind it, take them off then disconect the abs harness and pry out the old hub assembley use a rubber hammer (dead blow hammer) to tap the half shaft out if seized. when installing the new wheel bearing see your manufacturer specs. for torquing the axle nut back on.

From what you describe it likely is a very bad axle bearing. I would recommend not driving until repaired.

Front end

It is a hub assembly, each wheel has one. If you have play, are getting a roaring noise, or have an ABS light on, these are all symptoms of a bad bearing.
