Question about 1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited

1 Answer

91 jeep cherokee want start

I changed out the flywheel and the senor that goes with it, now it will not start. It will turn over and try to start but that is about it. It has gas and is getting gas. At one time the car had a alarm and someone said that when the computer was unplug that could be it. This is the only car my wife and I have to get to work. Please any help would be so grateful. Thank you very much.

Check the wiring to the crank sensor sometimes the wires under the rubber boot breaks on the engine harness side, pull back the rubber and see, you should check for spark if you have none then it is something to do with the crank sensor, did you check the new flywheel for a pickup spot for the sensor? or possibly a dowel pin that should have been transferred to the new flywheel and wasnt? sometimes also there is a procedure to set an air gap between the pickup point on the flywheel and the crank sensor this is very important there mabye shims or an oblonged bolt hole in the sensor please rate -Jeff

My Jeep cherokee not starting after removal of flywheel. Is there a specific way to install the flywheel?

The teeth on the flywheel need to be close enough for the starter motor to catch them when it engages. If you removed it and now the starter just free-spins when starting then you may have installed the flywheel backwards and the starter motor cannot reach the teeth on the flywheel. If its making a loud grinding or pinging sound you may need to manually turn the engine a bit to align the flywheel.

I have a 91 jeep Cherokee that doesn't start. When

If I understand your problem correctly, your battery is defective. Take your battery to a local auto parts store for a free load test. It sounds like one of the battery cells is going open under load.

The power is on and off so starting is hard

Need to try the crank shaft position senor. It work off the turning of the crank. It the sensor goes bad then the engine has no idea what position the crank is in, so therefore you won't get it to start. I had to replace a few of these on Jeeps , this is a big problem for Jeeps.

You say you changed the cam sensor. A1391 code is a crank sensor on the top of the trans. bell housing.

Have a loud rattling sound in the torque converter area whill idling . hold the brake and torque it up and the noise goes away. 96 cherokee

I had the same problem with a 2000 Cherokee. It turned out to be a couple of bolts that had come loose from my flywheel and were picked up periodically by the flywheel. You need to have this checked ASAP.
