Automatic Transmission Problems

My 98 honda civic lx runs great in the mornings or whenever I start to drive it for the first time throughout the day. Then once the car gets warmed up the transmission starts to slip everytime I begin to accelerate from a dead stop. Sometimes the engine will begin to rattle if I give it too much gas as the transmission slips. The check engine light came on and I got a computer reading that told me something about the gear ratios. I had my transmission fluid changed and the problem still persist. What can be wrong? Please help

I had the fluid flushed, and their are no leaks. Is the filter accessible?

  • heytavi Aug 31, 2008

Thank you there are no leaks and I just had the tranny flushed, can it be a sensor or do I have to change the filter?

In your trans mission you have solenoids that are run by pressures inside. often times if you have slipping it is due to these solenoids eith not opening or being stuck open. a quick fix for this is to purchase this additive from lucas oil products it cost about 10 dollars at either Napa,Oreillys, etc this should take care of the problem of the gum up that happens quite frequently in vehicles that don't have the trans fluid changed at regular intervals. when you had the trans fluid changed did they just hook it up to a machine or did they drop the pan and replace the filter for the trans?...a plugged filter can cause this problem as well. the third cause could be that your trans control module is faulty. this is what tells the trans to shift according to your engines rpm..........hope this helps.........please rate this

  1. Check the transmission fluid level, if it's low, you have a leak & Look for fluids that have leaked on the ground below the transmission. Check the transmission case as well. Fluid can leak from seals, gaskets, fluid cooler and lines. Pinpoint the exact source of the leak to make proper repairs.
  2. Place a few drops of transmission fluid on a white paper towel. Red or light brown fluid that spreads easily over the towel is in good condition. Dark brown or black fluid that is gooey or thick fluid needs replacing to allow proper pressure and lubrication within the transmission.
  3. Replace the fluid filter to ensure it's in good working order. Check the old filter for metal shavings, which are a sign of wear and require a fluid flush.
  4. Look at your check engine light to verify it has not come on. If the check engine is on, take the car to a mechanic who can pull the code and pinpoint the problem. Electronic transmissions can detect even small faults in operation, and you may want to drive the car to verify that the problem was not a one-time or erroneous error.
  5. Seek the assistance of a professional if the car is no longer going into gear, slipping out of gear while driving or a substantial amount of fluid is leaking. Fixing a transmission problem on your car early can save you money and help keep you on the road for a long time to come.

You should probably have your ignition switch changed. I replaced the main relay and the fuel pump, then ignition switch. Then had to have my transmission rebuilt.

Does anyone know Honda's requirement for timing belt replacement on 2005 honda civic lx. I've seen varying comments on line, would like to know Honda's requirement.1.7L Thanks for any help or suggestions....

From the Owner's Manual: replace the timing belt @ "110k miles or 7 years whichever comes first". We have 73k on our Ex and have had no problems with the automatic ... in fact it is the smoothest shifting auto that I've ever driven. I did a fluid change (incomplete ... u can't drain the entire transaxle) at 60k which is the recommended interval for "severe" service.
