Hey , just take the positive wire from the coil you are removing and feed it to the + terminal on the HEI dist. cap.the other terminal under there is for your tachometer. If you are mounting a master kill switch in the bumper for drag racing- attatch the kill wire to the tach terminal also.
Thats it you just plug the three wire pigtail from the dist. base(pickup) to the cap and you are off.
Remember firing order is 18436572 in a clockwise direction. to find #1 remove #1 plug and have someone"bump" the engine over while holding your finger over the hole-carefull. then line up the slotted mark on the crank pulley with the big notch on the timing indicator. Good luck

I have a 72 chevelle with a 350 ci , I put an hei distrubitor in it but now my alt wont charge and its brand new what should I do...

The HEI has nothing to do with the alternator

The HEI needs battery voltage, not the resistor,
that was there for the point ignition distributor

Unless you moved wires around to feed the HEI,
you just diagnose the alternator as usual

New doesn't mean it works
Have to know how to test it

Wiring for a small block 350

need to know if its a HEI cap and rotor or not. HEI caps have the coil built into them , an all in one ignition as compared to a external cylindrical coil.
you need to know that. either the distributor cap is a huge hurken thing (HEI) or it has an external coil somewhere or the cap has a ninth distributor hole in the middle of the cap to put a coil. wire.
after you figure out which one it is then you have to either go to www.autozone.com and study chevy wiring or buy a haynes manual for the similar vintage engine. for the external coil I would try a chilton manual for a chev truck before 1972. for HEI anytime thereafter. I may be off by a few years on the age of the engine. but hopefully you got an idea of what to do, or just google chev engine wiring? and study away.
good luck

Need 72 Nova wiring dash diagram

Go to faxonautoliterature. They can provide you with a wiring diagram direct from a GM service manual for your car for $8. I've used them before and had excellent service. Hope this helps.

Im looking for a wire diagram for a 1968 camaro it had a coil but now im useing a vacume distributor and dont know how much i can get rid of preferably a free diagram

That makes no sense to me, a vacuum operated distributor has the same single (primary) wire to the coil.

If you changed to an H.E.I. distributor then you need to find a good 12 volt key-on only source to run it, (hot only when key is in the run position and no voltage in the accessory position), and it should be at least a 12 ga. wire, you do not need or can no longer use the original power supply wires to the coil because the original resistor wire will not provide enough power flow to properly saturate the coil.

There is really not a lot of wiring on that vehicle, and you should put it into a loom and keep it out of the way if you do not want it. If you choose to return it to a stock condition later on, you will find it is not an easy task to repair or replace that older wiring. Keep it and hide it, you will not regret it later.

Where do i connect the green wire on atachometer on a HEI gmc ignition w/the coil seperate from the distributor?

GM HEI

Either go to the TAC terminal on the distributor or to the C- terminal/wire, which is typically a brown wire.

Hei distributor on old L6 engiune won't fire coil

'56 engine was likely a "blue flame" engine that had a points type ignition system. If someone installed a HEI setup in there, you need to know what year vehicle it came from. The old system used a hot wire from the ignition switch to the (+) side of an external coil...the (-) lead went to the points. The most common conversion uses the same (+) wire but it then connects to the "batt" terminal on the distributor cap.(coil is inside) There are no other wires involved except for the short harness that goes directly into the distributor that connects the coil, pickup coil and control module to each other..
