Re: overheating 1989 nissan maxima also radator fan won't...
Hi,must of the time when fans stop working is because a fuse or a fan relay is burned ,it is also posible that the fan motor also burn out, there is a temperature switch at the cilinder head that can go bad and the fan will not go on. this should do it .....

i believe the question was explained as fans work!! why all the fan inop answers?? anyway...you will need to check the water pump first...if you change it then make sure your cataltic converters are not plugged. from there its ussually a combustion leak from cracked or defective head gaskets due to the mileage. if it stays cool at idle its deff not a cooling fan problem..the fans only are used primary at idle. hope this helps
Do you mean when you turn on the ignition, not cranking yet, theres a sound from the engine?
Thats the case, the RADiATOR FAN starts up even the engine is not yet running?
Check the relay it maybe stuck up and needs to be replace!
Check the TEMPERATURE FAN switch, located on the radiator!
Tell me more, if what I said is the one bothering you.
CHECK THE FUSE BOX ON THE DRIVER SIDE UNDER THE HOOD. CAN BE EITHER YOUR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR NOT WORKING TO LET THE FANS KNOW TO TURN ON OR YOUR THERMOSTAT IS STUCK CLOSE OR THE FUSE FOR THE FAN MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED.
