Question about Mitsubishi Passenger

1 Answer

Hello, i am considering buying a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero. he current owner says it loses alot of water from the radiator during short trips like taking the kids to school and so on but says it is not as bad on longer trips, he says he has been told it just needs a flush but i am concerned it may be an indication of a larger, more expensive problem, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would say he meant on the ground, i assumed so therefor did not think to ask him to clarify.

loses it on the ground ? ... first thing i would think of is a plugged or non opening thermostat. overheats and dumps the water out.

Ask him very clearly where the water is going. there are many coolant loss reason. head gasket failure is one i can think of if it's not on the ground. start the car up or ask him to and check what colour the exhaust is. rev the motor abit.... clouds of smoke indicate serious issues.

You are missing the cause, the next step is to PRESSURE TEST the head, a machine shop does that for you. Long story short, something, somewhere is damaged, keep investigating until you find it.

What type of engine oil is best for a 1992 petrol V6 Mitsibushi Pajero and what oil filter

Hello ianandserena, you both have very nice names. This is simply the opinion of one person, but, if you do your oil and filter regularly, say between every 3,000 -5,000 miles, it doesnt really matter. If it were me, I would buy the cheapest on the shelf.

If your wanting to know the oil type, like 10-w-30, 5-w-20, I believe your car calls for 10-w-30, they do have a special blend for high mile cars that you may consider if your car has more than 100,000 miles.

Good luck my friend!

Does it use any oil, or lose any coolant? If not, do you make a lot of short trips, then shut it off by chance? If your not using oil, or coolant, then I'd say take it on a long drive at highway speeds to drive out the moisture laying in your exhaust system. Recently had a muffler go on wife's car that does a lot of short trips, and old muffler was almost full of water from condensation and obviously poor exhaust design, that allowed it to build up like that. Took it next night on trip about an hour away. Every time I took off, or passed a car, white smoke rolled out the back. On way home, it stopped and cleared up.

We are looking at buying a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0l EFI. It is blowing out white smoke soon after start up suspected blown head gasket/s. How easy would it be to replace it and get timing right?

Relative to other engines with the same size, the degree of difficulty is the same since most types of vehicles has the timing gear/chain facing the radiator. As long at you know where the timing lines line up and you should be good to go.
