Someone damaged the ignition cylinder lock on my vehicle while trying to steal it. A screwdriver or bladed instrument was jammed into the ignition to force the car to start. There is no deformation of the keyhole itself and there are small metal shavings inside the cylinder. There is no damage to the wires leading to the ignition assembly. I can insert the key about half-way, but no further. I can turn the key to all positions in the ignition as well but nothing happens (it does not ''catch'' at each position and my car battery is also dead). I cannot tell if the tumblers are destroyed, or if there is a removable obstruction. After performing some research, it turns out that I will need to replace the ignition cylinder lock (about $50) or the entire ignition cylinder lock assembly (about $250 to $300). With the given information, is it worth trying to repair or clean out the cylinder? It is difficult to guess the result, since I also need to replace the battery. If I must replace the cylinder lock or assembly, would anyone advise going to a junk yard to retrieve the required part (I do not know if I can even get the keys that match the ignition).
