Hi, there is a funky looking belt on the side of the alternator. It's different from the other bolts in the area. This is the lock bolt for the tensioner. Loosen this bolt and you'll see a long bolt that is threaded all the way. Turn this bolt clockwise, this will tighten the belt. Counter-clockwise will loosen it. The lock bolt that you're looking for is on the same side of the belt.

There is a squeeling noise under the hood of my car and it is not the belt because i got that fixed and it is still making the noise

It is most likely a bearing going out. It could be the water pump, the steering pump, air conditioner, or alternator. You may be able to localize the sound by placing a metal bar next to your ear and touching it near the things that have belts attached. BE CAREFUL so you don't get burned or injured by a fan blade or getting the bar caught in a belt!!!

If this doesn't help, loosening the belts one by one may help localize the problem. Do only one at a time. If you over-tighten the belt, it can cause squeaking and early failure. Also, if the belt is too loose, it can slip and squeak. You should be able to push on the belt (with the engine OFF, of course) and have it deflect about 1/2" to an inch at most.

Good luck!

I have a squeaking sound that I think is coming from the ac compressor. I noticed it stoped when I put on belt dressing and the pulley got wet. I heard the same sound coming from other monteros as well,...

once the belt become loose it slips and its friction surfaces become damaged .. even if its then tightened properly it may still slip .. an old damaged belt should be replaced and tensioned properly ... its common for older type belts to slip and make noise .. it is not as common in later cars since they often have automatic belt tension and improved belts .. any slipping is a sign of some other problem ... one frequently seen problem on some cars is a pulley that is spring loaded to keep the belt properly tightened .. the pivot on the pulley freezes up and no longer maintains proper tension .. those pulleys can sometimes be re lubed but often are hopelessly frozen and need replaced ... also other pulleys and the alternator bearings can start to make a squeaking noise when the sealed bearings lose there lube .. you can put a drop of oil on each bearing to see if one quiets the sound ..

How to tighten drive belt in my 92 honda accord LX?

if it gets louder when the lights are on that means its the alternator belt, and you will have to look under the alternator there you will find the manual tensioner you have to loosen the mounting bolt in order to tighten it with the long tensioner bolt.

My 97 tercel has also starting squealing when cold-but only when I reverse.

Squealing, like a belt? I've found that the alternator belt has to be super-tight or else it squeals. It's a pain in the **** to torque the alternator sideways enough to tighten the belt.

If it is a belt, you could also buy some belt dressing spray and see if that helps. It's pretty cheap stuff per can.

Car makes a squeeling / skweaking noise

It is either your serpentine or another belt such as an alternator belt causing the squeak.

This can be resolved by either replacing the belt or making sure the tension is correct.

If it is a serpentine then replacing it will be necescary if it is alternator belt there are ways to tighten it.

Belt dressing is another temp fix for the squeal. the belts become glazed over time and will squeak and chatter spray some belt dressing on it and the squeak will go away for a while.

How loud is the squeak? 1-10

The belt keeps coming loose on my 1985 amc eagle wagon. Apparently, this belt also charges the battery. So my battery went dead, and the car makes squeaking sounds...

You need to replace the alternator belt.they have a bolt which you loosen the belt. the belt probably got loose because this "tension" bolt was not properly tightened. the noise you hear is the belt slipping on the pullies. to replace it loosen the tension bolt until it is lose enough to remove the old belt. replace the belt with one of the same thickness and length. Be sure to tighten the bolt to where the belt will have about a 1/2 inch pressing down on it firmly with your thumb. you may have to remove some other components ( the fan for example) to replace the belt but thats questionable.

Belt noise

You should see a slider bracket on the P/S pump. Loosen the upper and lower bolts and with a pry bar, shift the pump to tighten the belt.

Belt noise

Under the alternator is a lock bolt. Loosen the lock bolt and there is a long threaded bolt. With a socket wrench turn the bolt clockwise and the belt will tighten up. After you get the belt where you want it, tighten the lock bolt back up. The lock bolt has an unusual head on it. It will look different from the others in that area.
