The P0304 indicates the #4 cylinder is misfiring. The flashing light means the cylinder is not firing at all...It could be several things causeing it, coil, wires, plug, injector or vacuum leak. Do not drive your vehicle until you have this repaired, as it will lead to further more costly problems. Good luck, i hope this helps.

could it be the coil pack i need to know how would the car run if it is indeed the coil pack?

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

You did not say what engine you had, some VUEs have a Coil-over-plug system, others have a front and rear bank system...and yes 1 individual coil can go bad. The coil can be tested with an ohm meter to see if it is within specs. Or you can remove the #4 plug and inspect it. If it's wet and gas soaked, that would indicate no spark. If it's dry and light colored, that would lead to a lean, or lack of fuel problem. I have seen the Vue's develop intake manifold leaks that cause unmetered air to be sucked into the cylinder and create a misfire. A technician with a good scanner that knows how to read it, can determine this, along with the other possibilities i mentioned.

4cyl 5 speed 2wd. Out of no where this problem occurred i was driving 2 days ago and the check engine light came on and is blinking on and off the service light came on but goes off for awhile and comes back on! When i take of the car seems to lag in power and while i am stopped or when i first start the car it shakes never had this problem before after 40mph it runs just fine under the 40mph it runs rough. Like i said i replaced the boots and spark plugs erased the codes but it still comes back on the (ses) light so not sure whats going on thats y i ask if it could be the coil pack?

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

oh yea and it has 163,000 miles i do standard oil changes and changed the driver side wheel bearing about 2months ago other than that i have had it a lil over a year with no major prolems i have put 20,000miles on it myself.

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

Absolutely, your Vue has no power because it is only running on 3 cylinders, that is why it's shaking also. The coil pack can be tested, no need to spend $120.00 to replace it if that is not the problem. All too often. owners spend a lot of money and still have the same issues. By first correctly diagnosing the problem the proper repairs can be determined. I have seen the intake manifolds leak on these Vue's on more than one occasion, and it seems to be the last thing that is checked. That is why i mentioned it...I hope this helps, and good luck with your Vue.

One other thing that is often overlooked and should be checked is the catalytic converter. They clog and put too much backpressure on the engine. Your mileage is an indication that this needs to be checked.

Check for poor electrical connection to the fuel injectors.
Look for sign of fuel leak (wet hose) around the fuel injectors.
====
lack of fuel (clogged injectors)
or
intermittent connection to injectors will trigger lean / P030x code.
In your cause, it's cylinder #4
====
Check fuel pump pressure if you has over 160,000 miles.
Most electrical fuel pump will fail after 160K.

A failing fuel pump will stop pumping when the tank is below 1/4. Keep the tank above 1/3 and do a short test drive.

  • Anonymous Jul 27, 2011

Im still confused as to what it is exactly i mean can the coil pack make the car shake if its back or act like its going to stall when stopped?

  • Vincent G
    Vincent G Jul 27, 2011

My response is about fuel issue (aging fuel pump).
Please fill the tank to 1/3 or high and see does it has the same stalling when stop issue.

A failing fuel pump will not able to pump fuel effectively below 1/4 tank in a HOT day.

Coil pack is the spark generator to each plugs.
Let's rule out fuel issue before spend $ on swapping parts.

Code po304 car wont start

cylinder 4 misfire ,now if this is a GM product then i think you may need a reconditioned ECU init as if this is the 4 cyl engine and its same as the opel astra and zafiro and the vectra then its a common fault with a 2000 to 2004/5 model the computer is bolted to the engine inlet manifold and very weak and susceptable

Vehicle missing,shaking,engine light comes on

Misfire could be a number of things:
a) spark plugs - change them if used over 15K miles - inspect/regap.
b) spark plug wires - change them if over 15K miles - inspect
c) ECM (electronic control module) - test with HEI (high energy ignition) tester.

The shaking tells me that the engine is running on less than its normal compliment of cylinders - the shaking is produced by the imbalance caused in the engine by one (or more) cylinder(s)
not firing at all.

The "Check Engine" light probably is coming on due the the misfire condition. Go to Pep Boys or
Advance Auto Pats, where they'll tell you (free) your codes causing the "Check Engine' light to be
lit - the code coming from your truck's computer will probably be one or more of:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder misfire detected
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire detected
P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 misfire detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 misfire detected
P0307 - Cylinder 7 misfire detected
P0308 - Cylinder 8 misfire detected
P0313 - Misfire detected with low fuel

Have 2005 lincoln aviator - has miss at 30-55 MPH - no codes replaced all coils ( ford) & spark plugs (twice) - repair vacuum leak at PCV Still misses -- no codes -- help

The COPS (coils) may have shorted the drivers in the PCM (computer). You should get a misfire code for each cylinder misfiring though.

Slim possibility, but very expensive unless you have a service contract.
LINCOLN: 1999-2004 Navigator
2002-2003 Blackwood
2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2003-2004 Marauder
ISSUE: Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316.
ACTION: Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s).
SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION:
  1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.
  2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.
  3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8. NOTE: DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY. NOTE: THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. UNLESS CONFIRMED, THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED AS AN "EXTRA MEASURE" SERVICE PRECAUTION. NOTE: THE REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WILL NOT IMPROVE OR REDUCE ENGINE HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE ABOVE ADVERTISED LEVELS.

Misfire in 97 voyager,P0300 and P0304,HELP! Need 2 get inspection

I'd have fuel pressure checked, and at the very least, replace fuel filter. Not unusual to get multiple misfire codes due to low fuel pressure, thus starving cylinder(s), and causing the misfire code(s).

Engine light just came on took to auto zone they gave me this code PO304 Trying to see what it is

A P0304 OBD2 code is "cylinder #4 misfire detected". The first place to start is your spark plugs. 1. Check condition and for wear. 2. check the spark plug wires or coil packs(depending on which you have).

My check engine light is on and the code is reading p0304 what could be the problem

You have a Misfire at Cylinder #4 meaning:
Dirty, fouled or malfunction Spark Plug at #4 Cylinder. Remove the Spark Plug and check the igntion (spark end).
Ignition (Spark Plug) Wire malfunction for #4 Cylinder.
Misfire from the Coil/Distributor at the #4 connection from Cylinder #4.
Get a Spark Plug/Wire/Coil/Distributor tester and check the Spark Plug, Wire and Coil.
I always recommend changing everything in sets meaning: Change all Spark Plugs and Wires.
