My dodge is having difficulty shifting from second to third gear. The rpm's will jump up to 4000 - 5000 and will shift only when letting of the accelerator or coasting down hill.

1998 ram 4x4 shifts from 1st to 2nd only after adding more RPMs then it slams into gear. same problem with other gears too. No check eng light is on

  • madatdodge Mar 07, 2009

my '02 ram quad cab 4x4 did the same thing today. Was going down the street at 50km/h when suddenly the rpm went up and speed went down. Like as if I had accidently bumped the shift lever into neutral. About a minute later the engine light came on. By accelerating very, and I mean very slowly I can get up to approx. 70 km/h in about 5-6 km, keeping it in drive. If I wish to accelerate faster, I have to put the gear shift lever into 2nd.

    the truck is a Dakota 2wd 3.9l 2000.

The problem with my '02 Dodge quad cab was a small plate of steel about 8 inches long, 1&1/4 inches wide and fairly thin that holds the valve body together is bolted on with to light a bolt and the material is too thin. Over time, with the shift solenoids and pistons slamming back and forth, the bolts break and cause the plate to bend. This makes the shift solenoids go out of line and the transmission cannot shift as a result. I'm not sure which transmission is in the truck, but Dodge has apparently issued an update for that part. They may even have issued a technical service bulletin for this problem, but to my knowledge, no recall. The repair bill at a transmission shop is around $700.00. At least I don't have to replace the transmission.

had the same problem it was a broken OD accumulator piston spring in the valve body. Just buy a transco SK 45RFE shift kit it comes with all the accumulator piston seals an updated and much thicker and stronger accumulator retainer plate AND the kit includes a "spare" set of accumulator springs (1 large & 1 small) in case the spring(s) are broken ,which they do from timt to time. It is only 6 bolts to remove the valve body (carefully) and 7 screws to remove the accumulator plate to access the accumulator pistons and springs. The instructions included in the kit are excellent and very straight forword, you won't need all of the parts but save them they may come in handy some day later.

2007 Chevy Avalanche 3rd and 4th gear are not working

From what you are describing, it is possible either the 3-4 actuator is no longer playing with the 3rd & 4th clutch packs, only way to know for certain is to hook up the good ol' pressure gauge to trans. system, yeah, you think the Chevrolet dealer should know this right?

Sell it now if you can!

Shift module

That transmission is one that has been used for years in Dodge and Plymouth vans. Do you know when the last time was that the fluid was flushed out and replaced? It's pretty important that it be done every 90K miles.......have it checked out.

2006 Ford Explorer shifts hard between 2nd & 3rd gears, both up & down, but shifts normal between 1st & 2nd, and in & out of overdrive. All was normal then almost not working the next

It sounds as though your valve body may have a lot of particulates that have entered into it causing the valves to act sluggishly. Unfortunately, this is a condition that can only be taken care of by your mechanic and is not something that the average person can fix themselves.

1998 Dodge Grand Caravan will not shif into 2nd

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd.

Dont think they changed it yet but the older chrysler units had a rod that went from the throttle linkage to the transmission (maybe a cable now)...If you lengthen the rod it will increase shift pressure and give you an earlier shift.
