I have a 2005 Chevrolet Impala...I purchased it used last year...I do alot of city driving and drive it from LA to Texas about twice a year...I'm thinking about getting a transmisson flush...I checked my fluid earlier today and its still red/maroon in color...Ive noticed that the transmission kicks a little getting into first gear...it doesnt happen all the time, just once or twice a week. Would a Transmission flush be ok or should I just have the filter changed and refilled?

about replacing a transmission with one from a Junkyard or cross referencing them. and to show you that not all 4T65E transmissions are interchangeable, although they look alike. Guys with the comp g package or the Impala police option often find this out the hard way.
Your car and the potential donor car will have a tag in the trunk (usually under the spare tire cover) that lists the RPO codes for your car, along with your VIN. RPO=Regular Production Order. Several of these codes relate to the transmission, and you will need them to begin to find a proper match. If you can't find the RPO tags, you can look up the RPOs for a nominal fee ($5) according to the VIN number at the following website: www . compnine . com .
I know these transmissions are different in at least 5 areas, and you have to match each area for a proper swap.
FIRST is the transmission type, which relates to torque converter size, the strength of the internal gears, and the strength of the differential. Here are the basic types along with their RPO codes:
M15 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter
MN3 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter
MN7 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter and heavy-duty gearbox and differential (see 4T65E-HD)
MD7 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (Chinese version)
M76 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (with all-wheel drive capability)
You will want a match these RPO codes.
SECOND is the final drive ratio. The PCM can detect the difference, and in some cars may not engage if the correct final drive is not present. Here are the RPO codes for the four different final drives used in the transmission.
FQ3 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.86;
FR2 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.93;
F83 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.05;
FR9 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.29;

THIRD is the converter stall speed. There will be small differences for most cars as it is based on car weight as well as final drive value and engine ratings. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area. Some indication of stall speed value is given in the K-factor information in the above gmtuners page. FOURTH, the torque converter needs to have the correct lockup clutch friction material for the PCM that controls it (regardless of HD nor not). This changed over the years. The newer ones can be used on older transmissions with calibration changes, but older type in newer transmissions will fail. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area.
FIFTH is area is electrical compatibility, and this is what trips up a lot of guys. 3 different electrical interfaces to the transmissions were used from 97-08. Some of these differences had to do with how the PCM determined what gear the transmission was in, or was commanded to be in. If you look on a GM parts web site, you will see that three different internal harnesses are available for the 4T65E. Each of the three harnesses is listed below along with the cars that use the harness. Your car and the donor car will have to match. Check with your local chevrolet dealer, you may be able to purchase just the button assembly any hardware required. If not ductape or electrical tape may work for you. Or a short drive to your local pick and pull may be another option.

CO2 or just O2 sensor? O2 sensor may be going bad due to blocked/plugged catalytic converter. This can be replaced @ muffler shop...use a 'universal' type catalytic converter to save some money - you don't have to use a manufacture unless your state requires it.

No it doesn't hurt to drive it.

You sound like you are low on fluid or your thermosstate needs to be change to proper weather (winter or summer). Check it out. Hope you didn't use pure antifreeze ! 50/50 mix... or premixed.

1 could be the fuel pressure vavle at the end of the fuel rail 2 maybe TPS (throttle positioning sensor)

Combined fuel ecomony is based on 50/50 driving between city and highway. But I agree that 13 mpg is quite a bit down from that!

Do you have a "check engine" light staying on while you drive?
I am guessing you don't or you would have mentioned it.

Bad fuel economy with no warning indicator can be a sign of problems with low fuel pressure or a non-functioning coolant temp sensor.

The coolant sensor can be reading in the cold range and keeping the car in a "cold/starting" condition that won't allow for the car to adjust to being warmed up.

I would have the car checked for any error codes by a local shop or parts store that offer cheap or free scans. At least to rule out the coolant sensor or fuel pump. The fuel pump will eventually go completely out if it is going bad so better to know now than later! Fuel pumps are expensive to replace and you will want time to save up for the job!

I usually change the fuel filters every two years like coolant system and transmition flushes , but may have to more often if driving above average mileage, running contaminated/dirty fuel, or if the fuel tank is rusty or has a contaminant such as varnish, water, alcohol, debris, etc... in the tank.

Is it the frt wheel sensor setting code again? If so I would check the connectors at wheel bearings I found most often terminal tension weak need to tighten or replace harness
