If this unit has throttle double injection two injectorts center of the carb there is a hose located derectly in the front facing you if you are standing in front of the truck. it runs from the valve cover or tappet cover to the front of the lower area of the carb it is a breather tube from valve cover. Clean it and on the carb clean out the nipple that connects to the hose. Back inside the nipple the carbon ,oil from engine has built up and blocked off an area which starves the engine of vaccumm . I have put a drill bit and twisted it in to the nipple about 3/4 to 1 inch back in to the nipple and sprayed carb cleaner in there and it resolve my issue.

My grand cherokee runs smooth for a little while and then sputters for a while. if i step on gas a little harder and then let off, it runs smooth for a little while again. what could it be?

check idle speed settings, and idle sellenoid.
most older cars that i have seen would do this when left to idle for long periods of time.
you might check fule filter, and for impureites in fule, such as water.

My truck will run fine with gas pedal pressed down just a little bit but when you want to accelerate faster and press the pedal down all the way it sputters , its a 5 speed. any suggestions?

When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters - including fuel filter? I would start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

Sounds to me like your choke is malfunctioning. Take the cover off of your carb when cold and see if the choke (top buttefly valve) is closed. It should be when cold. (you do not say what year truck you have so I am guessing as to the answer)

Your fuel pressure regulator is bad. It is a small round 2" diameter component with a vaccuum line connected to it. If you remove the vaccuum line ane have any hint of gasoline in the hose the diaphram is bad and needs replaced. It is located on top of the engine connected to the fuel supply rail. Hope that helps answer your question. Thank you.
