I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 and it shifts hard going into 1,2, smooth in third, and sometimes hard in 4th..after that runs top.. Also shifting jolt in reverse.. But, when I stated it this morning after a cold night, it shifted in all gears fine, then warmed up and started shifting funny again? No engine light is on had it ran at Murrays Auto Parts and Nothing? Trans fluid is good and up to proper level.. I heard that these vehicles have a Speed Control Sensor that would act like that if bad? How can I check myself if the Speed control sensor is bad? Can I unhook sensor and If car acts the same would this most likely be the problem? Any advice on troubleshooting this problem would be very helpful and wanted.. thank you so much...

i had this problem. is it leaking? look for the leak could be the filter not leaking could be the filter. If not could be that washer thingy. If not idk i checked and replace the things i listed and it was fine after that. i had low fluid after i put more in it still slammed hard into gear. so i checked everything now its fine

My 2002 Isuzu Rodeo with the 3.2L V6 downshifted from 4th to 2nd on the highway at about 65 miles an hour to pass and not it is stuck in what I think is "limp mode". The transmission will shift from Park to Reverse and then into Neutral fine and engage the gears. When I shift into Drive the vehicle will not shift higher than 2nd. Also, the dash indicator will only show Park and 2nd. Nothing in between. I have changed the transmission fluid and filter. There was not any large particles in the fluid although it was pretty dark, and had a burnt odor to it. I have checked all of the connections to the sensors to make sure they are plugged in correctly. I also have checked the battery and alternator. The battery sustains about 12.7 volts and the alternator puts out a steady 14.2 volts. Please someone who has any ideas please help. This is my only vehicle so I have to keep driving it to work.

Sounds like either your transmission is having problems with the valves...might want to have that looked at before your transmission dies completely......also have them check vacuum lines as i believe that car uses vacuum pressure to shift.

How to repair transmission? Transmission is a little rough shifting when accelerating. Sometimes when I put it into reverse it hesitates and then slams into gear. I get a P0733 code.

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit

If I'm undersatanding you correctly this could be a shift solenoid. I would take it to an ASE certified transmission shop. This repair is beyond a DIYer.

Car goes into reverce but does not engage completely works fine in forward, when in reverce it seems lik it wants to ingage but does not. it makes a chattering sound and feeling. what electric part puts...

Hello. As you know, the transmission is one of the more sophisticated components in any auto. It takes the most transmission pressure to engage reverse, third, and fourth gear in an auto tranny. In an auto tranny, the shifter is connected to a linkage that manually shifts between the different gears in the transmission. When you shift into reverse, all transmission pressure is concentrated to engage reverse. When you shift to drive the transmission will operate normally, building pressure until it can shift into the next gear. With third, second, or first gear selected it will lock out all higher gears (Unless the TCU detects overrevving of the engine, in which case it will override gear selection and upshift to avoid engine damage). All the TCU does in a modern auto tranny is control shift points. Years and years ago, shifting was controlled by a spring attached to the gas pedal. When the gas pedal was depressed, the spring would expand. As tranny pressure grew, the spring would become compressed until it was fully compressed, engaging the next gear. The harder you stepped on the gas, the longer you went until the tranny shifted. In modern transmissions the TCU dictates shift points, and not much else. The TCU will also control when the torque converter will lock, but that's where it's duties end. The problem with engaging reverse is either a linkage issue, or a problem with the pump not building enough pressure to fully engage reverse.

Try putting the shifter in reverse, holding the brakes firmly, and giving the car gas. If the car reaches a higher RPM and suddenly slams into reverse it is the pump. The pump will only build enough pressure to engage reverse with higher RPM's. If the pump is severly damaged it won't engage at all, but if this is the case it probably won't engage third or fourth gear either at that point. If the problem is with the linkage, reverse just won't engage whatsoever, despite RPM's. I'd say start with the shift linkage. If it's bent or misadjusted it could cause reverse to not be fully engaged. The TCU doesn't control reverse at all, since there are no shift points and no need for the torque converter to lock.

2002 Toyota Celica with a strange shifting problem.

Automatic transmission are complex systems. The shifting of gears is based on a number of things like bands, speed, acceleration, deceleration, manifold back pressure, RPMs, temperature, etc.
Sometimes the electrical ground connection for the transmission can become corroded which causes poor shifting.
Since you are getting an error code, you should get a readout for it. Many auto supply store like Advance Auto will loan a meter for you to get a readout. Call up some stores to find one.

Transmision shifting problem

Reverse is not sycronized, this means the gears have to stop to mess and not grind, two thing cause this, being to quick to slam into reverse after clutch is depressed, a problem with the clutch.
