I had the same problem with my son's 2001 Jetta.
If you have an after maket stereo installed, remove it and run your scan again.
Problem is an interuption of the diagnostic bus that runs throughout the car.

2001 Passat check engine light flashing and car shuts off will not start

The first step is to plug in an OBD-2 scanner to read exactly what the fault code is, that is setting off the check engine light (CEL). If you are in the USA, most auto parts stores like AutoZone, Oreillys, or Advance Auto Parts have these OBD-2 scanners and will check for vehicle fault codes at no cost (free).
Since the problem seems to arise when the check engine light comes on, it is likely the code will show the exact malfunctioning part, or an area to focus on.
Without knowing the exact error/fault code, it's impossible to say what the exact problem is, that's causing the car's shutdown.

2001 ford taurus engine light flashing with car shaking & dying when idles, car stops shaking while in neutral

Don't drive it anymore while the engine light is flashing, can do damage. Find someone with a scanner to scan what the problem is. Even a cheap OBDII scanner will work and narrow down the problem. Will give a code, then we can go from there.

Check engine light on my 2001 nissan altima it has 58000 miles on it.

Could be for a number of reasons. You need to get it scanned to see what the code is. Some auto parts stores will do this for free, but won't give you much information. Get the error code, and go from there, as it could be a simple issue.

I have a jaguar xj8 2001 which used to run fine until one day when i parked my car on my way back from office when I parked it all the car windows were closed but when i came back to the car just after...

the ecm itself has a fuse, look for that first-if it does prove to be good, you probably have a bad ecm, and the window being down part way might indicate a short somewhere-are all fuses and fusible links good?

you are facing the protocol problem, imports uses a diferent CAN interface, if your scan tool is not capable wont read it. try going to an auto part they're scan it for free

Obd2 check tricks 2001 dodge durango

On-off with ignition 3 times and you will get error code in odometer. Check the code from the internet gods, it will tell you. Probably small evaporation leak detected from loose gascap. Try removing ground from battery for 10 min, then replace. It should go away. If comes back, something more serious perhaps.

Will not start;will crankover

Step 1. Find a OBDII scanner (OBD stands for On-Borard-Diagnostics). Find out what DTC code (or codes) are stored in the ECU (DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code, and ECU = Engine Control Unit - it's the computer which manages engine operation).
Step 2. After you find out which code is stored in the ECU, go to and register your veh (by VIN). Afterward, you can navigate the Hyundai Service Site to find out what system is giving you problems, the diagnosis procedure and what may be needed to fix it.
Nuff said... Let me know what you find.

you need a scanner to turn off light . take scanner to read code. you got a bad sensor thats why check engine light comes on. its not going to turn off until you fix it. the light is warning you.something is wrong.
