I would check your linkage for proper adjustment. If that is ok check for bad trany mounts creating to much movement making it pop out.

I just bought a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 limited and am curious about the 4wd. It makes an eary kinda grindy noise coming out of 4 lo and my cousin who has decent experience with vehicles says that it...

Shifting into 4WD High can be done at up to 55mph. When shifting in or out of 4WD Low you should only be going 2-3mph AND the jeep should be in neutral (if auto) or the clutch pressed (if manual).
If your transmission is not in neutral when shifting in or out of 4WD Low, the teeth of the gears may not be properly aligned causing the noise.

My 93 Wagoneer is 4WD all time. Pulled into town doing about 35mph and heard a loud knock. It would do it a few seconds after taking off from a stop and when It would try to shift. Before I could get where...

Sounds like the fluid coupler inside the transfer case failed. In my opinion using those is a great idea
on paper but they just do not last as well as the older direct engagement units used in Cherokees and wranglers. I own many Jeeps and will not have a GC for that one reason.
The transfer case needs to be removed and rebuilt. There is no external repair or temporary fix.

Try putting the truck into reverse before going into neutral, then put it into 4-lo. Sounds like the transfer case linkage might need to be adjusted, nothing major. I've owned NUMEROUS Jeeps, and every one with an auto tranny was a PITA to get into 4-lo. And if it isn't engaged completely, it will pop out every time.

93 Jeep Grand Cherokee only revs when put in gear.

Three ways to check:
first: check if the shift cable is in position, cick down cable too..
-next: check if the torque converter is connected to the engine.
- remove the oil pan from the auto trans and check if the oil filter is in place. If you look to the right front side of the tranny, you see a lid with a coil spring in it. check if the spring is ok.
- if tranny is open, check for metal pieces or clutch material in the oil pan and the filter unit. If you find more than usual, replace the transmission.

Transfer case pops out of 4-lo

Either your linkage is not properly adjusted or the shift fork is a bit worn inside the transfer case. I have a bit of wear on my own and shift into low range while rolling with no load, between 5&20mph and it works fine except that I need to anticipate needing it before hand. One important rule...If it grinds, don't force it into gear. That will cause damage.
Also, if you just got it, change the oil in there...you have no idea when it was last serviced.

Well, in the future it would be better to let us know what it is exactly that you drive, (cherokee, grand, jk, cj, ....)however, i'm guessing from the picture that you drive a grand. I dont know how long you have owned it or if you have put it in 4 low before, but you need to put the normal transmission in neutral before shifting to 4 low using the transfer case (the thing that gives you 4wheel drive via the lever) However, on your vehicle, if you have full time 4 wheel, i think you have the selec-trac transfer case and only have a switch. According to the Jeep website and i'm assuming your manual, you need to slow the vehicle to 2-3 miles per hour and then place it in neutral before attempting to shift to 4 low.
