Car stalles when wormed up after a few stops

The fuel rail psi when cool is at 38-40 psi but stalls or idles bad it reads 40 to 45 psi is a bad fuel filter the problum or is it a sensor aka thotle postion or something like bad fuel pump wireing ect. ?

Check / change the ignition control module. It is located on the lower back side of the engine and needs to be reached from underneath the car. Autozone will test them for free but since they do not act up until they get hot they not find a problem even though it is bad. When they are bad they do not work when they get hot. I had the exact same problem with the exact same car.

VACUMN LINE LEAKING, INTAKE LEAK, THIS COULD BE AN EMISSION PROBLEM, THEY DO HAVE A TESTER THA IS JUST FOR EMISSION ITEMS, ALSO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON-BLINKING?

Could be that your fuel pump is going bad? Have the fuel pump pressure checked, the average fuel pump pressure is around 40 to 45 PSI, anything less and the car will stall or stop.

Stalling problems


By installing a fuel pressure gauge on service port on injection rail then drive car if dies pressure should be zero normal range 36-45 psi to keep the engine running low pressure could be stuck open pressure regulator. if pressure stays then you have eliminated fuel and move on to electrical problems such as spark.

Its a 115000 btu multi fuel.it starts up,runs a few seconds,then shuts off.it doesnt smoke or anything wierd,it just shuts off.


It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related issues,---------------

Hi Patty,

It sounds like you may have a couple different problems here.

Firts, the stalling when coming to a stop problem is MOST LIKELY being caused by a bad Idle AIr Control (IAC). The 4.6L engines are known for these "sticking" and working intermittently.

As for determining if the fuel pump is bad, the fuel delivery system goes like this:

Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the service port on the engine fuel rail.
Cycle the ignition switch from OFF to ON. Repeat at least 3 times to obtain the highest reading.

The "Key-On-Engine-Off" fuel pressure specification is 35 to 45 Psi.

The fuel pressure should remain within specifications for at least 3 minutes after the key has been turned on. (the pressure will probably jump to 50 to 55 psi when the key is first turned on, then drop to within the specification in about 2 seconds after initial fuel rail priming has occured.)

If this is all good, your fuel pump and the rest of your fuel delivery system is good.

If the pressure does not reach the specified pressure or does not hold the pressure for 3 minutes, let me know and we will check further for the cause.

The fuel pressure that you are getting is actually quite fine, I would begin to look at a mass air flow sensor first, then the manifold absoloute pressure sensor. Your fuel concern is over though..

you have a device that controls your idle speed called the idle air control valve. When it gets gummed up your engine may stall. However, the problem sounds more like the fuel pump, it's relay, or its ground. The ground is located on the left frame rail at the rear of the van. sometimes corrosion will cause a bad ground. You have many other sensor that can be bad, or connections to. when you say stall do you mean it will cut off while driving down the road or only when you let off the gas pedal to idle?

Sputering so i check fuel rail some gas doesnt want to idle occasionally will start and run then looses pressure and stall


Fill the tank to over 1/2 tank and add Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner

Do a fuel pressure test at the fuel rail.

The PSI should be 55-70 psi (or check the sticker under the hood)


Test fuel pump relay.

Check oil level and oil pressure. Low oil pressure,low oil pressure reading can stop the fuel pump from ran. It's a build in safety feature.

If it start and ran better the add only bottle of RED Iso-heat dry rule out water in fuel.


My bet is a weak fuel pump.

Fuel pump with over 110,000 miles will like to fail in a HOT day.

no timing belt on the particular vehicle. but yes probably something minor, check fuel pressure, fuel pressure regulator, MAF sensor and IAC motor. all these can cause intermitent stalls. The MAF is located somewhere between the air filter and the throttle body. it is a sensor that sometimes gets dirty with air particles and will affect fuel managment. the IAC motor is on the throttle body and if gets stuck with carbon will not be able to control idle. the fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail and if the vacuum line is filled with gas then the diaphram is bad. and the fuel pressure should be 35 to 50 PSI running.
