Question about Cadillac Eldorado

Replaced both cooling fans all sensors and cooling fan control head.when car first started and engine cold both fans run.also ocassionall cooling fan malfunction readout on readout window on dash.this is an 87 cadi eldo 4100.is it the main computter

When you first start the vehicle the fans whill cycle automatically. when the engine reaches temp the fans should kick on if they don't it is most like that you have either a weak relay or a loose wire very seldom would it be a severe ecm malfunction. please rate this solution

check your cooling fans make sure they are working, to do this start your engine and turn on the ac the cooling fans should be running, if it does the next thing to check is the temp sensors, to do this turn off the ac, while the engine is running keep an eye on your temp gauge if the dial is going up above normal or at the point where you say the engine is running hot check if the cooling fans are running,
1) if not running, cooling fan sensor is not working, replace
2)if running, thermostat is shut, the thermostat regulates the flow of coolant in the engine it is fully open at normal operating temp and close if coolant is cold, replace

The cooling fan is supposed to come on when the /ac compressor clutch cycles on, and off when it cycles off.
The idle speed kicks up to compensate for the additional a/c compressor load and the additional alternator load. usually, just the low speed comes on until it hits a much higher temperature.

the system should cycle 4 to 7 times/minute at 79 degrees F.

Here are some things to consider:(The PCM (engine computer) is NEVER defective, don't replace it). I don't think it is the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) or the Cylinder Head Temp Sensor. Or the VSS or the MAF sensors.


The electronically controlled fan clutch is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM) based upon requests for airflow to cool the engine, transmission and A/C condenser. If no cooling is required, the electronics permit the fan to spin at a slower speed yielding improved fuel economy.

Inoperative or damaged:
  • Electronically actuated fan clutch
  • Electronically actuated fan clutch controller
  • Wiring, connectors, relays or modules
  • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (4.0L SOHC)
  • Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensor (4.6L [3V])
  • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
  • Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Retrieve any DTC Codes (Diagnostic Test Code). Autozone will do for free.

The cooling fan clutch actuator valve controls the fluid flow from the reservoir into the working chamber. Once viscous fluid is in the working chamber, shearing of the fluid results in fan rotation.

The cooling fan clutch actuator valve is activated with a pulse width modulated (PWM) output signal from the powertrain control module (PCM). By opening and closing the fluid port valve, the PCM can control the cooling fan clutch speed. The cooling fan clutch speed is measured by a Hall-effect sensor and is monitored by the PCM during closed loop operation.

The PCM optimizes fan speed based on engine coolant temperature (ECT), engine oil temperature (EOT), transmission fluid temperature (TFT), intake air temperature (IAT), or air conditioning requirements. When an increased demand for fan speed is requested for vehicle cooling, the PCM monitors the fan speed through the Hall-effect sensor. If a fan speed increase is required, the PCM outputs the PWM signal to the fluid port, providing the required fan speed increase.

Sounds like your cooling fans on the radiator are not working. The fans are activated by a thermol switch on the engine or radiator reading the coolant temperature and an A/C switch. When the coolant is too hot the fans should activate cooling the system down. And, when the A/C is on the fans should also activate in order to cool the condensate so the A/C would work.

When you are driving, the movement of the vehicle throught he air is providing enough air flow to keep things cool and functional.

I would check the radiator fan fuse or fuses first. If those are OK I would try to run the fans with 12 volts and a ground that I supply just to see if the fan motor(s) actually run when powered. If the fan don't run when powered then the fans are bad and will need to be replaced. If the fans do run when you power them manually, then something is not allowing the power to activate, like a relay, control unit, or wiring.

It will take a little diagnostics, but it is not too difficult to chase it down.

I have 95 Chevy Lumina. March 2010 I had water pump, head gaskets, intake gaskets, thermostat replaced. Unfortunately I am having same problems as I did before all these parts were replaced. How can this...


Was the car over heating before the water pump and head gaskets were replaced? Putting in a new Radiator will make it run even colder.and take even way longer than the one hour it is already taking to warm up.The computer in the car commands the engine cooling fan On/Of at a predetermined temperature.It receives this data from monitoring engine sensors such as the engine coolant temperature sensor.So if it is defective and the computer is not recognising the defect it thinks that the engine is running hot when it is realy running cold and will command that the cooling fan be on.Resulting in the fan running in 24-7 as you put it. If you want the engine to warm up faster and the cooling fan to operate normaly then I would replace the engine coolant temperature sensor and the relay for the fan circuit as well. Cooling Fan won't come on, coolant flows into overflow tank


there is a switch in the engine intake or cylinder head that controls the cooling fans. The switch is the one with only 1 green wire hooked to it. Turn the key to run, with the engine stopped pull this wire off and touch it to a ground( cylinder head, engine block) and the fan should start, if not look at the fuse, if it does you need to replace the switch.

2000 BMW 323 fan keeps running under hood and has now run battery down. What could be the problem.


Hi,
First - disconnect fan and charge your battery - or you could do permanent damage to it.

With the engine cool, locate the Fan thermal switch. It should be on the radiator itself. Pull off the connection (this should turn off the fan)

Check the two terminals with a meter as they should not conduct when cool.
Fit a replacement. You may loosa a little coolant - but not too much if you are quick.
Top up with similar type.

If the fan switch is ok, it may be a relay which has stuck. This should be located at the end of the fan wiring loom.

Overheating


Could be head,or head gasket blown.But change the thermostat and check to see if the cooling fan comes on after it warms up.Be sure not to have ac on.Watch the temp.be sure the fan starts and runs good,and then it goes off by itself.If the fan does not come on,then check for a blown cooling fan fuse,or a bad cooling fan relay.Be sure the cooling system is full,and has no air in the cooling system.Coolant sensor could be bad also(this is what tells the ecm to turn on the relay that controls the fan.When the radiator is full,and the engine is cool,or cold,start the engine with the radiator cap off,and look to see if coolant gushes out of the radiator while the car runs.If ti does,head,or head gasket is blown.

The radiator cooling fan is not working. Upon


assuming fuse and relay are good..no fan should be running when the engine is cool/cold, the only time the fan should be running when it reach over operation temperature which then the fan kick on to bring the temperature back down to it operation temperature. both fan work in sync with one another, addition cooling is needed when the ac is running. when the last time have you replace thermostat and Thermos sensor/switch. I would replace both unit if you have not done so. The thermos/switch will turn the fan on when it reach certain temperature and cut off when it sense the temperature drop in the engine.

should have the coolant temp sensor replace from the sound of it. if bad it will think it is cold and dump more gas to keep it running. it also runs the fans
