Hey there, I was driving down the road when my engine failsafe mode light came on. I pulled over and shut the truck off, when the dealer told me aI could drive it into town I was only able to go 30 km/ph. The told me it was a throttle body sensor so they fixed it and charged me ^00 bucks, as I was driving home from the shop that day the exact same thing happened. Now they are telling me it is the throttle body itself, any ideas on what might be wrong. No warning numbers come up when they plug in their comp0uter

Re: why did i buy a ford
Most vehicles that are new have a fail safe. most of the time when this ingages it has to do with low fluid levels especially low coolant. no codes thrown on the computer presents a unusual problem because when the fail safe ingages it should auto matically throw a code. tell me when you first start it does it drive normal for a while?

go to a parts store and have the codes read(most of them will do it for next to nothing. There is also more than likely some maintenance needed. get back to me when you have the codes and we can diagnose this together.
Just because there is a code does not necessarily mean that part is bad, but an area to test to find the actual problem.
The dealer is correct but any auto prts store caqn bring the codes up for free as they want to sell you the parts to fix it. Failsafe is involve with exhaust emmissions and the car needs fixed noe before the parts are failed
You don't have what I would call a mechanic, and what he did was hook a scanner to the diagnostic connector, to check for codes, Nothing else. He diagnosed nothing.
You never left the vehicle with specifics, of your expectations of what you wanted fixed,so to speak.
Bad COP Ignition Coils--- -common on all 1998 thru 2011 fords with cop. At least 1 or 2 fail a year. Some spike the PCM and go into failsafe.shutting the vehicle down
I have hearing a lot of this lately with Fords. Most of the time this dash board light comes on due to problems with the Throttle Body (TB)not just your coolant,etc.. If it is sticking, dirty, causing misfires, etc. then this can cause an engine fail safe mode. You might first try putting in some injector cleaner and a higher grade of gas. Many people I know who have had this problem have had to have their TB cleaned and/or replaced. This is something Ford dealerships now about, but hasn't been made a recall or anything. There are service bulletins though.Mainly keeping cleaner in your gas and performing ritual tune-ups/oil changes may be the only thing you can do.Hope this helps
The failsafe mode can appear following numerous faults being detected - some faults can be momentary and register but not cause a problem. These are normally reset by just turning ignition off/on. get the fault code memory read at a garage and this may give you a clue as to a possible problem developing. Failsafe mode will give you reduced engine performance but will allow you to drive for normally some distance. If a serious problem developes your car message centre will tell you to shut off the engine or it will shut it down.
