After my chevy is warmed up, it will not start unless I put the gas pedal to floor. And rpm goes up

If it is running rough or dies after you are running or you turn it off and try and start it and it acts as if it is flooding then sounds like you have a bad temperature sender. It is not showing the computer that the engine is warmed up and is telling the computer that it is still in cold state and is giving more fuel to try and start. Need to change your temperature sender.

Trying to find out what to do first, before buying a fuel pump

i would try replacing the fuel filter first. if it's clogged, the gas can't get through, but if you wait awhile, some will slowly seep through, enough to get moving untill clogs up again. yes, most fuel pumps are in the tank. some cars have a little trap door in the inside of the car just above the gas tank to allow acess to get the pump out.
