Could be valve problems get a garage to check it out or to make sure get a two foot length of wood and hold it to the top of the engine against your ear while somebody is reving it up
The ticking may be coming from the valves, and or, the rocker arms, and or, the lifters. I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier that has valve train noise and has 230,000 miles on it and is still going. If you are taking the oil cap off when the engine is running, you will see oil spitting out of it, since the engine is lubing the top end. Most vehicles have a pressure gauge on the instrument panel, and or, an oil light, which would show pressure problems. Try to isolate where the ticking is coming from by using a mechanics stethoscope, or a screw driver to your ear. The handle part of the screw driver goes to your ear of course. Place the scope or screw driver blade close to where the tick is coming from and you will hear the ticking get louder the closer you get to it.
I'm following another issue like this on a 1996 Jimmy. This engine requires 60psi or more fuel pressure to run. You need to have someone check the fuel pressure at the rail- throttle body with a gauge.
This is an internal problem that will only get worse. Most likely a rod bearing, slight chance a wrist pin. Either way it's not good. To repair could simple or not. You just won't know until you get inside and see what the rest of the motor looks like. Sorry for the bad news.
there could be several reasons for the ticking noises. to be sure can you tell me everything in detail from when you start the vehle to when you shut it off. this will help me narrow down the likely cause
Are you sure its not an exhaust leak ..? They can sometimes sound like a ticking noise and the noise will change with temperatures of engine.. ? also if you can borrow a stethicope from someone which is used in automotive repair alot (different than what your doctor uses) this will help you pinpoint the problem .. It sounds to me with out hearing it you have a loose rocker arm possably .. If this is the case this is a easy fix and very inexpensive. just figure which side its coming from take the valve cover off and tighten it till it stops ticking and then give it 1/4 turn. Holler if you need more Jerry
it may just be a lifter tapping that comes about with worn engines check the oil look at the color and it it need to be changed it it does you can try a quart of marvel mystery oil when you change the oil try tht it may help
The first thing I try when this problem occurs is to press the gas pedal to the floor (don't pump) and let the engine crank for a while without letting the battery get too far discharged.
If it is only a momentary problem with flooding which can wet the plugs and stop them from firing, this will allow more air into the engine and dry the plugs off so they can fire again.
If this doesn't work, then you need to establish whether it is fuel or spark that is missing.
Hi mckayb_15, this could be a few things first to mind is lifter noise, check your oil and it may be necessary to have them adjusted,it could also be an electronic issue, how loud? is it consistent and all the time? start with this and let me know good luck
the lifters are naking noise because they are worn out or the engine oil is not reaching them due to the oil pump, but due to your cars year they might be just worn out there is only one way to fix a problem like this is to get then replaced there is no quick fix,and also they will just get louder and louder like tick tick tick and it will sound quicker.
